Gel Recommendations

Hi Ladies. I need some gel recommendations for smoothing down my edges while I'm wearing my braids. I'm looking for something that works well but doesn't cake up. Currently, I just moisturize with Wild Growth or some other moisturizer at night and tie it down. My edges are nice and smooth in the morning but by the end of the day they look fuzzy again. I mean it's not a horrible thing to have to deal with but since my hair is growing well now (YAY!) in another week or 2 they'll be out of control. lol Any suggestions?

hey ennyaa,

here in our px they sell european mystique. i use their gel. it doesn't contain alcohol and i use it to smooth my hair when i wear it in two braids or in a ponytail. it's pretty good and very cheap. i think one bottle costs $0.79. here is the link to their web site

i have the red bottle. i have asked my friend who lives in brooklyn if they sell it in the states and she said she never heard of it. cause she was looking for a good gel also. maybe you can find it somewhere.
i also liked the herbal essences gel cause it smells soooo good but it contains alcohol so i never bought it again.

Fantasia IC Gel with Sparklelites or Kera Care Protein Styling Gel are both good gels to use for smoothing down edges. The Kera Care is a protein gel and can be drying over time so you should probably try the Fantasia IC gel.

Whichever one you choose be careful that it doesn't contain any alcohol. The last thing you'd want is to dry out your hairline.

For a light gel I like Isoplus Pre-conditioning Light Styling gel-it is yellowish in color. It doesn't contain any alcohol. My stepdaughter uses Proclaim gel-it is clear. I am going to get some of that myself, and it is supposed to be a moisturizing gel, has no alcohol, and makes her hair look very smooth and shiny.

Pretty much every gel I have seen has some kind of protein in it or other. I think the protein content in these is lower that most-but don't quote me.

Hi Nay,
I also live in Brooklyn and can't recall seeing the European Mystique here but I know it's somewhere in the states. I can't think of who, but someone I know used to use it.

You said the px, are you or your family military?

i use Let's Jam clear, KeraCare and Smooth 'n Shine. none of these contain alcohol. the KeraCare even has glycerine, but it's a brown color, which i kind of shy away from with the braids. ya know?

Thanks everybody, I'll start checkin those out. I didn't know that protein was drying either. /images/graemlins/shocked.gif Yet another thing for me to look out for.
