Queenie, are you referring to a 'wet' kind of gel -- the kind that makes your hair curlier? If so, yes, I find that many of those gels make my hair look dull. For that reason, I try not to use any when I am wearing my hair in a wavy or curly style. It's sometimes hard to resist, though, because gel adds weight to my hair and helps to reduce the volume of it. If I feel that I must use one of those gels, I apply a little almond oil over it to restore the shine to my hair.
Solid, 'dry' gels like Glaze by Elasta QP make my hair very shiny. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
I actually find it depends on the gel for me. With many gels and cremes for curlies, I had a huge problem with dull cripsy hair. I recently switched to Ouidad's Climate Control Gel and haven't had the problem since. I used to only wear my hair curly "sometimes", because the look would succeed was a toss up. Now, I find wearing my hair curly is my "main" style, and straightening it is the rarity. You get all the shine and none of the "weight" or dullness that some other gels can leave you with. I couldn't live without the stuff. It's pricey, but well worth it in my book. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
For some reason, when i use gel or hairspray, my hair acts strange and i find it becomes dull too. No matter what kind i use, my hair just doesnt like it /images/graemlins/nono.gif
Yes, gel was making my shake & go's look dull & dry by early afternoon...(not to mention making my hair a bit too stiff for my liking). In addition, it contributed to my crown frizz issues.
I sampled about 5 different gels. Then I started using "curl activator" gels (like Proclaim, Luster's) which gave more "wet" shine, but still produced somewhat "stiff" hair. If I use gel, I have to use a lotta oil with it. That's too much work (for my lazy self). But I may try gels again during the summer/humid months!
the only gel i used that made my hair look dull and dry was elasta qp feels like silk /images/graemlins/barf.gif. fantasia ic and lets jam all leave me with shiny looking hair.
After prolonged daily gel use, my hair became superdull and lost its texture even though while I had the gel on my hair it would be nice and shiny. I only used it to smooth...not throughout. And it's just a small section that it seemed to ruin. I guess it's like my hair became addicted to it. I've weaned it off and I don't plan on ever using gel again.
