Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

Well I had box braids; I now rock my half wigs in the day time and keep my hair in a satin bonnet in the evening and home time. My DC consist of Aubrey Organics White Chamelia, Keracare Humecto or CB Smoothe Triple Silk. THey are amazing and I'm super happy with them. My protein is Hair Mayo or Aphogee 2 min (and I now use them as needed only). I cowash with HE LTR conditioner. My thing is that my hair feels great on wash days at that moment and then 24 hours later I'm back to being Tumbleweed Head Tom with this dry hair dillemma. I live in South Florida...so winter is something that just happended a week ago with a cold front that passed through, lol; I've had this problem for a long time now. I moisturize int he morning before I put on my wigs and at night before bed; I seal with the oils I mentioned above and it feels good for that second and that's it. So I don't enjoy this healthy and full hair because it feels like crap and looks dry too. But it's very healthy and doesn't break and I'm happy about that.

I had this problem too...since you live in Florida, which is humid, you might want to try a spray mix of vegetable glycerin, aloe vera, and rosewater on wet hair...this is very moisturizing and it smells good. You might also want to try adding honey to your DC... this makes my hair SUPER soft.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

yes, I've done the honey in my DC...I too love it. I'll look into the spray idea.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

smiley. When im having problems with moisture retention I look to 2 things first. Protein & porosity. If those 2 are straight...then i look at my products. Sometimes, and for some folks, oil based moisturizers may not give them the full daily moisture they need. Qhemet is a great moisturizer. ..but with a lot of oils & butters. so i find that i have to use this after a good water based moisturizer.also, using products with too heavy of a cone can interfere with daily moisture as well.

I think Poochie nailed it. I would try Roux Porosity Control. After one application, DC, moisturizing and oiling were so much more effctive. I bought a small sample size at Sally's to make sure that I would like it, then immediately bought a large bottle. I wish I had know about it sooner.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

Use nothing but S Curl. Clarify your hair so there's no other product on it, then ACV rinse.

On damp hair it will dry up a bit brillo pad-ish. But then apply some more once your hair is dry and comb through. Then baggy for the night. (Transitioners/stretchers can probably recommend a better way to use it.) Your hair will be soft and moisturized for days. You won't need to reapply

Every single person I have dared to try this regimen after they've shared their frustation with steel-wool hair has PMed me to thank me coz it really worked. Transitioners or stretchers will tell you it softens their new growth. If you need more proof, check out this post: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=158105

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

Have you tried the Qhemet Biologics Amla Heavy cream and/or baggying? I think these might work for you.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

:yep:
I agree with Nonie!
I was one of those people that asked her more info
about S-Curl.
It does do the trick! I'm transitioning and this product has
become a staple of mine! * I bought 5 bottles during November*
I use it alone or with Afroveda's shea alma.Softness out of this world!! I'm good for at least three days straight.
The only thing I don't like is the smell, *smells artificial perfume like for my nostrils*, BUT
it does the job. Plus its cheap, especially for a college student on a low budget!:lachen:

If you are looking for the all natural solution try Afrovedas Shea Alma
if you want a product easily available and cheap try the S-Curl.
Two GREAT Products!
Please don't miss out on either one!

I've heard of this s-curl but have never seen it. what are the ingredients?

How do you use the Roux...can you describe it to me (the process)?

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

I think I'm one of the few who's hair hates S-Curl...it sure did the trick but man oh man did my hair get in a funk after using it a few day. So, I stopped it immediately.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

I tried the Qheuemt Burdock root or something it didn't do much for too long...you see why I'm frustrated...I feel like I tried everything. But you all gave me some great tips, advice and a different way of looking at things so Im anxious to try.

Aww...I'm sorry to hear this. When you say it got in a funk after using it a few days, what do you mean?

For the record I only use S Curl on wash day. I never reapply after wash day. I apply to damp hair in the AM then that evening to my hair if it feels crispy as usually happens when the water dries. After that, I can go 3 days without applying. It's uber moisturizing so if you're applying it again and again "for a few days" then I can see that being a problem. One application for me and baggying every night makes my hair seem to absorb it so it's moisturized, feels moist without being icky sticky, and it doesn't leave marks on furniture. I cannot rave enough about how awesome this product it.

:lachen: Have you ever tried Hawaiian Silky 14-in-1? That's what I use when I am out of S Curl. Works the same and my friend thinks HS14in1 smells like strawberries.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

Hi..newbie here (finally out of lurker mode),so I may be way off, but do you have hard water where you live? I'm pretty sure this is one of the reasons I experienced more dryness after I moved. I have yet to get a chelating shampoo, but after reading into it and the harsh effects of chlorine and mineral deposit buildup in one's hair, it seems nothing will moisturize the hair properly until it's stripped of it.

Hope this helps

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

My light bulb moment came when I started to incorporate a spritz of water, jojoba oil and aloe vera juice in addition to my moisture product (my own reformulated Qhemet Biologics Burdock Butter Root and Heavy Cream). When I was only just using the moisture product my hair would come out but since I use the spritz I realise that my hair needs water (aloe vera juice also). I tried the s-curl alone and that is too gummy for me so if I do use it I put lots of water in it before spraying it on my hair. Hope this helps. In another post last week, one of the ladies talked about the difference between moisture water and moisture products.

Best,
Almond Eyes

eta: n/m my advice. i see you are transitioning

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

I agree with the ladies that recommend clarifying/chelating and/or trying roux porosity control.
If none of these work, then i recommend the It's a 10 line of products

The It's a 10 miracle hair mask, and the leave in spray.
My hair is natural 4a/b,and even when my Aubrey Organics slacked on me ,these products helped my hair bounce back. This winter is wreaking havoc on my hair:sad:
Good luck op.:yep:

Currently I am using Curl Souffle' Organic curl care by Curls and it is very moisturizing and leaves your hair soft and manageable. You should give it a try!

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

scurl made my hair start to break or shed...and it was so limp and felt really funny...hard to describe, that's why I said in a funk, lol. It was just a hot mess. I used a small amount on end in particular and sealed with oil and although it made the hair SUPER soft, the condition of my hair was not great to me.

That's the problem: You are not using it ALONE.

BTW, for those who don't know, S Curl is one of the products we used to use back in the day to give us that juice dripping Jheri Curl look:
soul-glo.gif

It didn't dry up all day. It behaves the same way so there's no need to seal. Only when I use it on my natural hair, it doesn't get all "soul glo" like that^. The strands get soft (which means they are well moisturized), and my hair feels cool to touch as if it's wet, but the hair isn't sticky and touching it doesn't leave my fingers with goo! I do not use products coz I can't stand the thought of leaving marks on furniture but I will use S Curl coz that doesn't happen. At the risk of boring those who've heard me sing this song, S Curl change my mom's regimen from one that seemed to need heat just to be able to deal with her hair, to one that doesn't need heat and give her soft, beautiful hair.

This was her hair before I introduced her to S Curl. It felt dry and was rough to touch:
HeatDamagedHair-vi.jpg

This is her hair on S Curl regimen. It was so soft to touch and after plaiting it for the night and baggying, in the AM combing it was a breeze:
MomsSCurledHair-vi.jpg

Baggying helps the product penetrate the strands (methinks) and in the AM, it will feel a bit damp but that makes it easy to comb, as the day progresses, it'll dry to a softness that isn't icky sticky or gooey.

You do not need to reapply. Trust me. Just baggy again, and the second day and third day, you will enjoy soft hair that is just a joy to feel. That's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it. :giggle:

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

Have you though about eliminating cones from your routine? I noticed you use a few products with them. Cones make my hair feel really soft when wet but then it is horribly dry afterwards. Eliminating them really helped me because when I stopped using them I din't have to use poo on a regular which was another thing that caused dryness for me big time.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

I use to have this problem when I was relaxed. My ends felt dry and fried though I didn't use heat.

What helped me was upping my cowashing, elimination as many cones as I could, kept combing and brushing down and braid my hair after moisturizing. I would either box braid my hair or cornrow and wash those.

When I got natural I had another dryness problem. Overnight Dcing and sealing with Crisco helped that.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

Could it possibly be the protein in the Megatek that is causing brittleness?

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

Also OP what is your water like? If it's hard then that will have a damaging effect on your hair.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

OP - As someone with chronic dry hair it sounds like your moisture problem is an issue of not only your products but also your techniques..

1- If you're having an issue retaining moisture why are you using so much protein?? Moisture/protein balance is super important and from reading all the posts on this thread it sounds like between the megateking and the coconut oil (which retains protein)....it would be a great idea to scale back on those two things. Don't MT so much and stick to sealing with jbco or something else for a while

2 - please use the wet towel steaming method suggested to you earlier in this thread. I swear by it. And when you d.c dont use a protein dc...using something moisture rich like Keracare or whatever your moisturizing dc of choice is makes more sense for your issue. You said your hair feels good on wash day....this will make it feel better :lick:

3 - if you are going to use Qhemet or any other rich buttery leave in, please remember that nothing really moisturizes but water anything else we use in our hair is to help retain that moisture. I would recommend lightly misting your hair with a spray of 2 parts water and 1 part of your favorite conditioner...(not sopping wet just a mist) then try applying the Qhemet Alma & Olive....or Burdock Root products (I use Alma cause my hair is dry and coarse and needs the added heaviness. Use your discrection)

After you've applied the water/conditioner mist and product, seal with a little bit of jbco, (braid it in plaits if you'd like) and wrap your hair in a silk scarf for the night.

4 - In the morning when you wear a half wig, i highly recommend baggying under the wig. You dont even need to apply more products unless you want to (i usually just use a teeny bit of the mist spray and just lightly seal my edges and ends in jbco)

All these things are highly intentionally methods for not just introducing moisture but retaining it irregardless of whether it is winter or not. I've learned them during my 26 week stretch after months of feeling like you did. And they really helped.

This go round the new addition to my regimen will be that I will introduce ponytail rollersets into my wash day after week 6 to keep my roots straight without direct heat. For the first 6 weeks I plan to just wash and dry my hair using the crown and glory method.

oh and im not sure if i read this correctly...but why do you clarify or acv so much? stripping your hair when it doesnt seem to be that nourished to begin with feels a bit counter-intuitive.

i cowash most of the time and only shampoo/clarify like every 6 weeks or when i go to the salon for a blowout. but thats a personal choice. for me i just know that anything more than that would be silly cause there aint much to clarify cause i'm tryna keep all the moisture i have :look:

HTH!

i use a leave-in conditioner spray mixed with a little oil everyday and it works like a charm.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

My hair is super short (can't go into a pontytail) how do you baggy short hair?

I am browsing through all the replies and tips and will reply in detail when I get home from work on my computer. I am so thankful for all your advice everyone. TTYL.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

Smiley I don't baggy but I have suggestions on baggy short hair

1. plastic shower cap (it a bag it counts

2. Satin cap/wrap baggy doesn't have to be in plastic. I gues technically I "baggy every night cause every night I moistureize seal and place hair under a satin scarf.

To add onto what Kiffany said, baggying isn't just putting a ponytail in plastic. There is such a thing as whole head baggying and that's the kind I do. I either put on a plastic cap, or wrap Saran wrap around my head turban style, or put on a plastic shopping bag and tie it. As long as my whole head is covered in plastic, I'm baggying.

Re: Frustrated and struggling with daily hair moisture? Anyone else or any suggestion

and you're using a moisturizer and sealing with oil or are you using other specific products. I need to search past threads on baggying because I always ignored it thinking it was for ponytails and longer hair.
