From Your Anti-Scissor Happy Stylist Advocate!

Mahalia Lee, thanks for that info. You're right, it's about the $$$$. My mom was at her salon once when a phone call came in to the salon. It was for her stylist who couldn't actually take it at the moment. The woman who'd answered told her it was a client who wanted to know if she could come in at such and such a time. My mom's stylist said "My car note's due. Tell her yes."

That's where their over-booking comes from.

Azul, I could almost guarantee that Cathy Howse went to the extreme of saying no trimming due to her experiences with SHS's. I'm not that extreme--I believe in trimming, just not the amount that many of the stylists are trimming.

This was a really good post. I vacillate so much between worrying that my ends look scraggly and worrying that the stylists cut too much off to maintain progress. The question that I have is how do you avoid the SHS? Everytime I get a touch-up it seems like it's pretty much a given that my hair gets trimmed. Are there any stylists out there that truly believe trimming is purely optional and not necessary? Any non-SHS that you can recommend? In NYC?

The thing that kind of disheartens me when I spend time on the boards is that the more I learn, the more it seems like I'd be happier staying away from salons.

So then the only solution is at-home touch ups and trims. However, I really don't feel comfortable doing this at home. So again I wonder, are there any stylists that can meet ALL of our needs out there?

There are only 2 stylists I've found that do trim and not cut. One is a Dominican stylist called Miguelina on 1st Avenue between 88 and 89 street. If your walking going North she's on the left side of that block. She trims exactly what you say and no more. Just show her in the mirror and that's what she cuts.

The second is Marcia who I see for touch ups. She did trim me though the last visit (week before last) and she gave a nice but very modest trim. So much so that no one can tell I had length taken away but the ends look nicer, not scraggly. She works at La Var Hair Design 72nd and Columbus. Salon is on 72nd street. TAke 1 or 2 train to 72nd and walk East down 72nd street. They are like half way down or a bit more, 2nd floor.

Great post, Supergirl. You have such lovely hair, who can argue with your advice? Thanks for the post.

Yes we have to be vigilant at the stylist's, and assert our rights as consumers. I have gotten into so many arguments (to the point of threatening to walk out, and I HAVE walked out of some salons), arguing with stylists that want to do what THEY thought was best because THEY are the so-called experts. I even had one stylist who got paranoid just because I was looking at the products/ingredients being used on my hair while at the salon. We have every right to be informed consumers, and as consumers, to ask for what we want and insist on that SPECIFIC service being delivered in a particular way.

Also who's to set a standard, that we should ALL always get a trim after every relaxer, or that we all should do anything in a standard way. All of our hair is different-no one thing works for everyone. That's almost as bad as the stylist I knew in California who gave EVERYONE a mushroom style, just because it was an easy style for her -- a mushrom isn't for anyone, and the frequency of trims or any other service is an individual thing.

Thank you for posting this thread it was very informative, especially the info re: the split ends.

I enjoyed reading this thread.

I trimmed my hair on Saturday because I saw a few bent and split ends in my hair, and because my ends were thinning, but having read this thread, it may not have even been necessary. And now that I think about it, I have played around with split ends before, only to notice that one part of the split breaks off, but it does NOT travel up the strand. It may become a bit weaker, but it did no traveling whatsoever as the hair "pros" tend to suggest.

Thanks to Supergirl, and all the others that contributed their knowledge in this thread. I truly find this subject interesting, and hope to read other opinions on this subject matter.

PS- Mahalia, I can't believe those hairdressers who actually fooled their customers on purpose and then talked about them later!!! I honestly didn't know there were stylists that thought like that!!!!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge Supergirl. Honestly your post came just in time for me because I couldn't understand why my ends were looking dry. I did not give my ends their usual TLC for about 2 weeks because I was down with the flu and my ends got pissed off and turned ugly on me. I was so upset because I haven't used any heat on my hair in months and my last major trim was in August, but I feather dust my ends regularly. However I took your advice and I washed and roller set my hair and my ends are looking GOOD!!! Thanks again! I was really dreading having to go to a SHS and explain that I want a light trim

thanks for bumping this post up. I am dreading my 6-7 week touch up because I know my stylist wants to trim my hair when I hated getting trims but I am scared to say something. But when I go in I am going to directly tell her touchup, roller wrap and NO TRIM. please I have no split ends thanks to my hair friends

This is an excellent post. I am still recovering from a disaster hair cut from my former stylist that occured the week befor thanksgiving. I have these horrible layers. I have to read this post from time to time to get encouraged. Right now I am in the habit of cutting individual splits off (right above the split) This saves length but it is also time consuming. So now I am wearing protective styles and using the split ender by revo styler every 7 weeks. I put pro-vitamin treatment on my ends almost everyday so they do not get dry and now I am wearing protective styles. I hope to be bra strap by christmas (or sooner).

Supergirl you are on point with this post. I never have any problems growing my hair but my stylist who was giving me a touch up every 5 wks kept cutting the length. I am so grateful to this board not only am I not touching up every 5 wks but she will no longer be doing my trims. Yoyo2 will be doing my trims but she doesn't know it yet.

Excellent, excellent, excellent post! Like others here, I was only able to grow my hair after I stopped going to the Scissor Happy Stylists. I also had the experience of going into a salon with below-the-shoulder hair and coming out with hair that was well above my shoulders because she said the ends didn't look good. I really trusted her, until I started really examining my ends myself, and telling her not to trim ANYTHING. One day when this happened, she said that I really needed a trim b/c of damage to my ends, but I told her I didn't want one. Once she started curling, she seemed puzzled and said, "Your ends look okay after all."

The length I could've lost! Now that I do my hair myself, it is much longer than it's ever been, so i know what you are saying rings true! By the way, Supergirl, your hair is just beautiful. It's definitely an inspiration, and your advice is always on point!

Great thread, thanks for all the information. I'm way late finding it but I am saving it to my favorites and will print out in the morning. Good looking out. thanks

Supergirl this is a terrific post. You are one of my hair inspirations on this forum. Thanks for your advice. Your hair is that serious. The results from your hair regimen is awesome. You're like E.F. Hutton; when you talk, ppl listen. Understandly, I am very apt to take into consideration everything you have to say.

btw, you'd get my vote anyday.

Great post, it is so true about air dried ends looking a little rougher. I'm glad you mentioned that because I've actually cut my hair on my bad hair days thinking I could make it better.
I've also had my experience with a SHS. Everytime I would go she would always need to give me "a little trim so my hair would lay right" I ended up loosing so much length that year.
Funny thing is I was just saying to myself yesterday before I read this post that I was going to lay off trims for 2004 and see how much hair I would have at the end of the year. I plan to wear protective styles or updos so unevenness will not even be noticeable.

Supergirl, after rereading this thread. I realize that I myself am scissor happy. I am always so worried about my hair being even and my ends looking scraggly in those in between stages.

You have inspired me to try to go longer in between trims instead of trimming every time I get discouraged about my ends.

Thank you, you are the best!!

Supergirl, I couldn't have said it better myself. I too did the experiment of cutting a split end and pulling the end to see if it would split up the whole hairshaft...nope. So I trim my own hair.

Ladies you also have to remember that your stylist cuts your hair with the same scissors that she cuts all her clients with. The blades are dull, and most likely your hair will pull where they cut because of the snags, and you will still have split ends.

Also hairdressers will try to make your hair as even as possible when cutting. They mess up. They will trim until it's even to their eye, and if they have to cut three inches then so be it. You have to tell the hairdressers DON'T CUT it. If they say it will fall out, then tell them well that'll be more you cut next time.

And the poster is right who said they charge extra for the trim. Where I was in Alabama it was 5 dollars for a trim, so if they wash and curl and cut it adds 5 dollars to the price.

I never understood why hairdressers needed to cut one full inch above the split end. Because it always seemed as though the ends split again anyway.

And shorter hair needs to be maintained more, more maitanence more money.

Supergirl's hair is the bomb, Supergirl's hair is the bomb!!

(It's so pretty , I HAD to say it twice!)
I have always agreed with you regarding trimming, which is why I don't let anyone trim my hair. I'll do it myself, thank you!

Every time I have let someone else trim my hair, it has resulted in a disaster.
