I have a question for you. What do you do to cleanse your hair? I've been shampoo free for about 3 or 4 months now, but I keep getting the urge to use shampoo. I know that it makes my hair feel stripped, brittle, and dry, but I don't know what else to do to 'cleanse' my hair.

I've tried to stay away from cones to avoid build-up, but my hair likes cones...I think. Anyway, I'm just looking for suggestions and tips. TIA

I've been scared to try the baking soda thing because I'm afraid my hair will feel like straw, does it leave your hair soft?

I clarify with a baking soda and water solution every 3-4 weeks.
:yep: Me too.

Everyone's results will be different but, it left my hair incredibly soft. It was gentle enough to remove the build up but not stripping. A lot of ladies have gotten great results with organic bar soaps for hair and the like. I haven't tried any of those b/c I'm pleased with the results I get from the baking soda and other products I have selected. Hopefully some others will share their experiences with you.

I use about 1 tablespoon Baking soda to 16 oz of water to clarify then, co-wash with Suave Humectant conditioner, and follow up with a Deep Conditioner. My hair is always soft afterwards.:yep:

I use V05 condish mixed with Baking Soda and water. Afterwards, I do an ACV rinse. It works out pretty well.

I should try baking soda. I only shampoo once a month. When I do, I use a sulfate free shampoo

I need to try clarifying myself...not that my hair needs it. I will try the ACV/baking soda mix when I do...WEN is what I use and I have not felt it necessary to clarify, but maybe I don't know what to look for...

my holy grail is elasta qp cream conditioning shampoo it is cone free and the comb glides through my hair like you would not believe (even when i am stretching relaxers):yep:

or i use V05 tea clarifying conditioner

I have also used regular conditioner with baking soda added with good results

I tried that Elasta QP and my hair did not like it at all!:nono: But I bought the Vo5 Kiwi Lime clarifying conditioner so I will try that out

Thanks for all the suggestions everybody. I'm going to give baking soad a try next time I feel I need some cleansing!

u could try castile soap, i've never tried it but i've seen little bottles of it at target in the beauty section. You are supposed to dilute it, there and many different ways to mix it with things like conditioner and oils, many people on youtube have discussed this, just search castile soap

i use ayurvedic powders of shikaki and amla with some orange peel powder for clarifying w/o stripping. i make it in a tea and my hair loves it!

Shikakai shampoo bar, shikakai powder.

Bronner's has a All in One with Shikakai in it. I have the green bottle, but haven't used it on my hair yet. I've heard good reviews about it, yet am surprised not many talk about it on here.

I saw this at Vitacost.com and it looks interesting. I love anything with lemongrass in it.

I have a large bottle of the lavendar and the almond to finish off before I can buy anything else. Their stuff is so concentrated that it lasts forever!!

In the meanwhile, I really love my Indian powders and what they do for my hair - I apply the Dabur Oil overnight then apply the powder as a paste mixed with aloe very juice and molasses to my hair.

Comes out great - clean without being dry.

I mix shampoo with conditioner and lather it up. I do this once a month and it keeps my hair from being stripped (raped?) from all moisture.

Once in a while I'll get a more moisturizing shampoo like Inecto Coconut oil shampoo

Once in a while I will use the shampoo bar from LUSH called Trichomania. I have tried other shampoo bars, and other shampoos but nothing has surpassed the satisfaction I get from Trichomania.

It does have SLS in it, but it is the only shampoo I have ever used that makes my hair feel squeaky clean without making my hair feel dry (both liquid and solid). I don't know how to explain it. Usually if my hair is squeaking I know its going to feel dried out but somehow this is squeaky clean and super moisturized I am guessing because of all the creamed coconut in it.

It doesn't lather up very much, but thats because it doesn't have any other surfactants in it. A lot of shampoos add extra surfactants and foam boosters because people don't feel as though they are washing their hair if they don't see a cascade of bubbles everywhere. I actually just did a research paper on shampoo manufacturing, environmental impacts, health effects on exposure to ingredients and the purpose of the various chemicals in the shampoo concoction. ( Yes I go so far as to take my hair obsession into academia)

It smells absolutely delicious too. Sometimes i want to bite into it and eat it, but i don't.

I highly recommend it!

Here are the ingredients:
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Stearic Acid, Creamed Coconut (Cocos nucifera), Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Cocamide DEA, Lecithin, Perfume, Vetivert Oil (Vetiveria zizanoides).

I use about a teaspoon of kosher salt and 1/2 teaspoon of ACV added to my cowash conditioner. I only shampoo when I've used cones for straightening, which is maybe twice a year.

I've used Castile soap in the past, but must not have diluted it enough because it took DAYS for my hair to feel "normal" again. But that Shikaki soap looks really interesting.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

I wonder if Castille soap can be used to clarify...?

Yes you can. If it is liquid soap dilute it very well, like double the water to soap, or more. If it is a bar soap, I lather it in my hands and rub soap into hair and scalp. It cleans, clarifies and doesn't strip the hair.

Shikakai cowash: about 1/4 cup mixed with vo5 and mustard oil. It leaves my hair feeling clean yet soft.
