For those who are wearing braids...

...what are you using to moisturize your scalp? I'm looking for something that I can spray on the scalp only because it is the easiest and fastest way to oil the scalp. I went to the beauty supply shop and I did not like the braid spray selection. In the past I've tried african royale braid spary and did not like it. It made my hair very sticky and it wasnt really moisturizing. I also have tried Sta sof fro and while that is moisturizing it causes alot of build up on the scalp.

I was thinking of making my on spray with just plain old water and glycerin? Should I get glycerin or vegetable glycerin? Should other oils like olive and coconut oil be added? Any other suggestions?

I use the African Royale Braid RX. And it works great for me, never had any problem with stickiness.

I also use diluted infusium
And I use diluted Designer Touch curl activator.

If you start to notice any buildup. hold the length of your braids up in the air, take a set wash cloth and squeeze lots of warm water over your scalp only.
This keeps the braids from getting fuzzy too fast but will cleanse your scalp. you can also do this with baking soda & water.

hope this helps.

I don't put anything on my scalp. I let my natural sebum, drinking lots of water, taking flaxseed or chia and massage take care of the condition of my scalp. Never have matting or build up. Love a scalp that's free of products.

I agree with Nonie.

To keep my braids moisturized, I do regular co-washes, oil rinses, and use a spray that is 50/50 100% aloe vera and glycerin(with a little saa mixed in). Its very moisturizing with no stickiness.

Great post! I make sure I moisturize my braids twice daily with African Pride or Royale spray. It seems to do the trick but my braids feel sticky after a couple of uses. I was using the Scurl but it did the same thing so I might be trying plain ole water.

I have gone from using braid sprays basically anything with glycerin to just plain old water and EVOO. I found glycerin tangles my hair...

I also use the African Royale BRX braid spray and I don't have any stickiness. I wash my braids every 2 weeks as well.

recently I've been using tea tree oil spray on my scalp......I also clean my scalp with the anti itch growth treatment from profectiv

Thanks for all the responses guys!!!

Mook's Hair, I actually do something similiar with a wash cloth and have found that it keeps my scalp very clean and free from build up when I experience it.

Faith, do you think that the glycerin could be causing the stickness and build up on the scalp, because actually the two main ingredients in sta sof fro was mainly water and glycerin (with of course other ingredients).

What are other good humectants other than glycerin? Can anyone think of a good hair recipe that would make a good braid spray? or is water and EVOO or EVCO good enough?

I use different things, dpends on my mood it seems... mostly Ayurvedic tea rinses... for me, even if its a commercial product, I need to change the type of spray bottle I use... I recently bought Nexxus Luxe and I had to go to the dollar store to get a spray bottle with enough "force" for lack of a better word

Hey Lina, I would bet money the spray is causing stickiness and buildup. If you have ever gotten those sprays on your neck/face you would notice it's sticky. I would dilute it...if you want to continue using it. Or just get a good conditioner (I like Kenra MC), add some water and some EVOO and it should be good enough. Especially if you are washing 2-4x/month.

I wore braids for a long time and didn't really need anything to moisturize my scalp. I thought this was true for most people but if you want to, you could use a light oil.

I use a spray i made of water, glycerine, salerm 21 B5, Rosemary EO and MN. Occasionlly i will dab my scalp with some home made coconut oil or any of my ayuverda oils.
