I tried it last night and loved how smooth and soft my hair came out, it also looks thicker. I was concerned though that a little too much hair came out, maybe about or a little smaller than a dime when balled up. I combed/brushed through my hair a lot to get it smooth so that it would dry as straight as possible.

1)Is there a way to avoid hair coming out, but still get it smooth?

2) I was only 1 week out of my relaxer when I did this yesterday. I am a 4a/b, and usually relax after 6 weeks, I want to try stretching it though to avoid overlapping. Will this method work for me to stretch the relaxer or will the combing break the hair?

3) Please provide any additional tips you have for this method of drying.

When I tried this method for the first time in May, I had a little hair on my comb after it airdried. It think its from some of your hair being dry and some of your hair being slightly damp. You might want to wait even longer for it to dry all the way before combing it out. Hair probably came out because of maybe the new growth u had from stretching your relaxer.

I'm mostly talking about hair that came out while I was combing it into the ponytail while the hair was wet. Was this wrong? I really don't have any new growth yet, got my relaxer last sunday.

I am not sure but I recall reading something somewhere that said if you airdry using the ponytail method you should avoid combing your hair. I am not sure where that came from since I comb my hair after air drying my roller set.

oh ok, I experience little to no breakage when combing wet hair into a ponytail. Before combing it into a ponytail, I used my leave-in, oil mixture, and glossing polish in my hair. Maybe that helped my hair.
I know that other people on this forum don't even use a comb to put their hair in a ponytail but I couldn't do that because my hair has little loops in it when trying to put my hair in a ponytail with just my hands.

Your hair loss could have been from brushing your hair into the pony tail. I would avoid brushing wet hair.

So far I haven't had success with this ponytail method on my hair when airdrying. However, I've had success airdrying with the ponytail rollerset method for smoothness and with no hair loss. AnjelLuvsUBabe describes this method in her hair album and has great pics of it.

I've never had success with the ponytail method precisely because of what you described -- too much combing (I don't use brushes!) needed to put hair into pony tail and my 4b relaxed hair just can't handle that much manipulation while wet. In addition, the tension from the pony tail I felt was too much for my wet hair as well. All around, I found this just wasn't for me and am back to my rollersets.

This sounds interesting. Maybe my problem with the breakage is from not allowing it to airdry a bit first, and waiting until its damp to put it in ponytails. I'm going to try this the next time, maybe with 2-4 ponys.

Is this what you do, let it dry a bit first.

I comb my hair in the shower, under the spray and I form the pony tail. I usually ponytail it in the shower (with a bit of leave-in or oil, and wrap the towel around it for a while to draw out some of the water.

After that, I tie it down with a scarf, and let it dry (usually over night). I've never had an breakage with this method

Oh, and I have used this method for up to 19 weeks post relaxer, and I've never had trouble getting the new growth smooth

i do this method also, I call it the wet ponytail, but u shouldnver comb it even after it dries, and also dont brush or comb tooo much. when I comb my hair with the conditioner in, that is when I basically try and get all my hair back. after I rinse it out, it is still goin back, so I add my leavein and comb back, DO NOT BRUSH I REPEAT DO NOT BRUSH or you will have no edges.

after all is done. I brush a lil with the side, not hard but just to mae it a lil smooth, after you tie it down thats when it gets really smooth

so you put it in a low pony tail. I did mine in a semi-hi one, cause that's how I wanted to wear my hair to work today. I'm going to try it again that way. Or I might try allowing it to air dry a little first.

You are absolutely right the scarf really does smooth it out!!

yeh I usually do a low pony, because it would be too much manipulation trying to put it in a high one, but a semi high one you should be able to do, semi-high is like the crown area righ or a little below, if that is the case then use a jilbere shower comb after conditioning, and comb back up, while leaving the front the way u combed it in the shower, hope that helps
