Have you ever pressed the NG? Is it safe to do so and if so, how long after can you perm that area?

I would never do that. I've heard that your hair will break and fall off @ the demarcation line. I don't know if it's true or not...it may be one of those old wives tales...but I'm not going to try to find out.

Hmm...I've never considered doing it mainly because I have a good flat-iron so that works just fine for me. However, I wouldn't recommend it. I don't know what would happen but I wouldn't risk it.

This is true and I speak from experience. A hairdresser did this to my hair many moons ago and that is exactly what happen. I had never heard of it but I trusted her as the "expert"

ITA. A good flat iron should get the job done.

i've been strtching for 7 months and before i found this forum i got my hair pressed every two weeks and my hair never broke at the demarcation line. now i just rollerset and flat iron the ng but i still get a bress every 6 weeks or so.

I haven't pressed my hair but I do use the flat irons that the salons use to put in the ceramic plate.

so what's the difference between pressing and flat-ironing?

arent i, in effect, "pressing" my new growth when i use my flat iron?

:scratchch

I just had my hair flat ironed and my edges hot combed at the salon a couple weeks ago and I have not noticed any breakage. I would think that to flat iron and using the hot comb would be the same being as though both get super hot. I think as long as a good heat protectant is used there shouldn't be an issue. I am 5 months post.

i havent used a hot comb yet but i would guess its the same as a flat iron.. if i was going to do it.. i just wouldnt run the comb all the way through to my relaxed ends.. just like when i flat iron.. i dont run the flat iron all the way down to the ends.. only on the part i need straight

I think most people think it's a risk b/c at least with the flat iron, you control how hot the thing gets. With a straightening tool that heats up on a stove or heating iron, who knows how hot it may get? What if the person doing your hair isn't a good judge as to how hot is too hot? There are just more risks and you have to be careful.
