Hi everyone,

I am thinking of getting kinky twists to help me along in my transition. I love the look:lol: . I have a couple of questions though.

1. How are the end sealed/completed to ensure the twists don't unravel?
2. Is it common that the braider provides the hair or is there a superior brand I should buy and take with me?
3. How long do you leave them in for (typically)?
4. Any special care instructions?

Thanks in advance for any advice given!! Also I am in NYC. I am thinking of going to Fa salon uptown but I live on Long Island. If anyone has a braider closer to me (Nassau county, Queens) that they could recommend for this, I would appreciate it also.:look:

There are a couple of excellent threads on kinky twists! Also, our resident Kinky Twist expert Sareca has a great tutorial in her fotki. She mentions some preferred brands of hair.

Usually the braider will provide your hair, but Sareca has excellent information on selecting hair.
I would say 6-8 weeks is general time frame to keep the twists in. You may have to get your edges re-twisted or do them yourself as needed.

Usually, the ends are rolled on small rods, then dipped in boiling water and allowed to dry. This sets the ends so that they don't unravel. HTH.

Thanx, I have been searching old threads but not finding answers to the questions below.

Anyone else have some input??

1. How are the end sealed/completed to ensure the twists don't unravel? some braiders burn the ends...i dont like it bcos my hair smells like burnt hur for a couple days...whatever u do dont let them burn the length of the braid...i let my braider so it once when i used to get it done professionally and when i took the braids out...DAMAGE to my own hur:mad:   i prefer the curling on small culers and dipping in boiling hot water...for straight ends just dip in boiling water without curling....
2. Is it common that the braider provides the hair or is there a superior brand I should buy and take with me? you may wanna call the shop 1st...usually ur total price is cheaper if u provide the hair...
3. How long do you leave them in for (typically)?6-8 weeks tops....anything longer than that left my hur and tangled, dreaded mess...literally:lol:
4. Any special care instructions? yes..wash weekly...stylists will tell u not to wash but as long as she does a good job it will not unravel...moisturise everyday with braid spray...African royale, Parnevu Teatree spray are some of my faves...u can also use any homemade concotions of moisturizers and natural /E.oils (basically treat it as u would ur loose hair) HTH:) :) :)

  I show how to attach 'em. LondonDiva shows how to structure the rows.

her pw is in her profile and mine is sareca.

1) My ends are not burned.
2) Tasha's my favorite, but it's hard to find.
3) I keep them for 6-8 weeks.
4) I do all the same stuff (except henna and hard protein) that I do to my hair when it's not braided (DC, steaming, leave-ins, hot oil, moisturizers, etc).
HTH

I am currently wearing my first set of kinky twists and I like them. I plan on taking them out within the next four weeks because my hair is growing extremely fast (Viviscal:grin:) and I already have about 1/4" after three weeks of having them in.

1. How are the end sealed/completed to ensure the twists don't unravel? My stylist rolled the ends and dipped them in boiled water. The have not unraveled at all.
2. Is it common that the braider provides the hair or is there a superior brand I should buy and take with me? My stylist provided the hair. You should ask your stylist beforehand if she will be supplying the hair.
3. How long do you leave them in for (typically)? I plan to leave mine in for another 4 weeks, which will make it 7 weeks altogether.
4. Any special care instructions? Be careful with them and maintain the upkeeping to help prevent the hair from locing. I have heard many horror stories about hair becoming locced if the twists are left in too long. I don't know if it makes a difference in the hair loccing if the hair is put in using a different method. Some people begin twisting the hair with the extensions from the roots, but my stylist and others I know put the extensions in by braiding about 1/4" and then twisting the rest. I dont know if braiding helps to prevent loccing but I noticed many people choose to do this rather than twisting.
