This is for the people who hair was short and now is a super longer length. How did you get to that length? What products and techniques did you use?

Patience!!!
Along with, finding which products are best for you, not for everyone else. And last but not least, Keeping it absolutely as simple as possible! I've learned that this is very important for me, to retain length. If you don't touch it, you won't break it!
I currently use, Traders Joe's products (All natural, Organic, Sulfate Free), the Nourish Spa Shampoo and Conditioner for my Moisture, I use ORS Replenish Pak Conditioner for my Protein (My hair can't stand too strong of protein), this is just enough. I fluxuate between the moisture and protein, every two washes, Oh, I wash every 10 days, if that! I clarify every 4 to 6 washes. I do other things like Garlic Treatments, per needed for shedding, and I moisturize and seal according to what my hair is telling me!

i guess on this board i am not considered to have long hair yet, but i went from having a fade to shoulder length hair in 12 months with a few trims. keeping it simple is the best thing you can do. i don't use heat, i wash/dc once a week, i moisturize daily. i wear low manipulation styles, since i do like to wear my hair out. that is pretty much it.

i hope someone with longer hair can give you some advice too!

Bumping for more responses I really need some motivation man! Its like ive been at neck length forever! Im sure there are alot of threads like this but I enjoy it when new ones are posted because its more updated :)

decreasing manipulation and unecessary trimming. splits and breakage will happen, I just work to decrease their quantity rather than continuously cutting. I was stuck at neck length for years until i checked breakage by babying my ends and leaving my hair be. i went from a TWA to APL now texlaxed. My hair is the longest that it has ever been and is still growing. Also, it seems a watched pot takes longer to boil.

search this..."Naturals -- How long after your BC did you start noticing growth?"

I'm not "super long" but this time 2 years ago I was barely EL.

Patience is the biggest thing. If you're taking care of your hair (moisturizing, low to no heat styling, no double processing, trim less often) it's going to grow and retain. I know you've heard the phrase "A watched pot never boils." Don't length check too often because it'll make you anxious.

Take care of it and the length will come.

I always give the same advice to anyone who asks me about growing long hair.

- cut back on chemicals - I don't try to talk anyone out of a relaxer, but I do advocate waiting at least 8 weeks for a touch up, 12 weeks or longer is best IMO. And no color. Some people can wear it without damage, but most can't, so if asked I say stay away from color.

- cut back on heat - I don't use heat at all, but I'm not anti-heat. I just think it should be used in moderation - say twice a month at the most.

- stop trimming so often - You should know what kind of shape your hair is in before you see your stylist. If you know you don't need a trim, don't get one. if you aren't damaging your hair with chemicals and heat, you shouldn't need a trim more often than every few months.

- protective styles & low manipulation - self- explanatory

Products, vitamins, regimens, etc. don't matter as much IMO. You don't have to be a hair scientist to have long hair. It's fine if you want to do extra stuff, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary if you are doing all of the above.

Of course there are people who don't do any of the above and still have long hair, but I would say they are the exception, and not the majority. And of course this is all just my personal opinion. :yep:

There are two members that I can think of, lonei and sylver2 who grew from short pixie cuts to WL. They have fotki's that you can check out too.
