Did you or do you experience any hair shedding? I have been reading some of your stories and so I'm trying the no comb approach. I've noticed alot of shedding and I'm wondering if the no combing is causing it. Also, did you ladies give brushing as well?
Thanks!

Hi Nesha, I'm guessing the shedding is just the normal shedding that would be happening every day if you were combing your hair. All of that trapped hair has nowhere to go, so when you do finally manipulate/comb it, it all sheds at once. As long as it's long hairs and not short broken ones, then I think it's fine. It's totally normal to shed up to 100 hairs PER day.

I comb only when my hair is wet and/or full of conditioner. I have given up dry combing for about 2 months. I do get hair in my shower comb when I do comb and detangle but not nearly as much as I used to get when I would comb my hair daily. When I wear a straight style I only use a comb to section my hair for my nightly mohawk set.

I may use a soft bristle boar brush to smooth my hair for a bun but no daily brushing for me. I also have a denman brush I use on my daughter's natural hair but even that I don't use everyday.

Hello:-))
I only comb once a week in shower and yes of course I experience shedding. Its the normal shedding, no broken hairs. Usually suppose to shed up to 50 hairs a day. So if u don't comb your hair everyday then that will come out when u finally do comb but its not much

I don't comb or brush but when I have to do a little finger combing hairs come out but its due to normal hair shedding as the others have already stated. I think you should be fine.

Hello!

I have been trying to implement not combing and brushing myself. I do get the normal shedding, but no breakage. It's easy for me to do this when I do twist outs, but I still use a comb to smooth my edges down for a bun. Again, no breakage, just normal shedding. But on wash day... I have to keep reminding myself, "You haven't combed in a week...don't trip off the hair you see in the shower!"

Actually up to 100 hairs a day can be shed...
Anything below that is all good :)

I only comb my hair after I have washed and during conditioning my hair. I have no breakage just shedding from not combing out the loose hair during the week. It just long strands of hair.

can someon eexplain what "broken hairs" are?
Broken hairs are small, pieces of hair, not the long strands you see when shedding. Hair can break off due to too tight hair band stress (ponytails, buns), too much protein, too much heat or improper use of heat, etc. When I used to blowdry, there would be broken hairs all over the sink and floor.

during the 5 days that i dont comb my hair i do get the odd long strand coming out, they always have the bulb tho. only about 3 or 4. i use my boar brush only if i need to. sometimes my hair gets oily so i use the brush to distribute these.

oh yeh I knew this, I had it down at first then went and edited it. Don't know why:-))

I comb on wash days only, and I do have what seems to be a lot of shedding, but it's certainly not the 500-700 strands that I'd have if I lost as much as is normal. So I've never been concerned with it. I definitely think the lack of manipulation has improved my hair's condition and discouraged breakage. :)

This is also what I do especially when I have alot of new growth...if I need to style my hair...I would use my fingers only...Not combing, everyday, have also helped improve the condition of my hair.

Sylver2 do u wrap ur hair? And if not, how do u style ur hair b4 bed so that it still comes out straight? I'm asking bcuz I'm currently wearing my hair straight and I wrap it everyday. I don't like to comb my hair everyday but I don't know any other ways to style my hair b4 bed and still keep it straight.

I use to wrap my hair all the time. Now I just do it every once in a blue moon like immediately after a touchup or when I'm to lazy to flat iron.
I leave it hanging straight in style I'm going to wear. i put on satin scarf with hair hanging out the back. I then loosely swoop up hair to the right and place it in a satin bonnet. When I wake up.. Hair is straight and smooth. No combing involved. I show pics of this in my fokti.
