Hey Ladies,

I was wondering if any of you ladies had breakage from wearing buns. Not so much from the bun being too tight but from the constant insertion of the pins?

Thank in advance :)

No, but I think that is only because I use Good Hair Day Pins. When I was using other pins, I remember seeing my hair in the pins all the time.

I broke my hair off something fierce in buns, but it's b/c I use that hair comb thing to secure my hair. And at the time I was using it 24/7. I'm still addicted, but I use it sparingly and w/great caution.

Good Hair Days pins are the best things ever made. Sally's stopped carrying them, but Ulta.com carries them in 3 colors. :) I have them in every purse, every coat pocket and bag that I carry. :p Another great trick w/them is to dip them in a bit of oil. That way they slip right out of your hair when you are ready to remove. Boadicea came up w/that one.

I have received some breakage, but it came from wearing them in the same spot and styling them while my hair was wet. The pins weren't a concern for me.

I have not received any breakage either in a bun but then again I don't use hair pins either. I stick to wearing my sock bun daily (this makes it fuller) and add a satin hair scrunchi on top of that.

I am glad you asked this question because I get concerned about this each time I see someone mention using pins and other holders to make buns that they wear on a daily basis. I am interested in reading the responses. I didn't ask because it seems to be such a popular method of making daily buns here and the ladies seem to maintain healthy hair while doing so. I don't wear a bun often, but when I do I don't use pins or other things to hold it.

Good Day Hair Pins have been mentioned here often (and above) but I have not seen or looked for them yet. I'd like to try them for my French rolls and other updo's someday.

For many years now, I've used large, generic hair pins with balls at the ends -- the kind that have a large gap between the two sides. They are 2 1/2 inches long and strong, yet flexible, so just a few can hold a lot of hair. These are much better than the bobby pins I used long ago which are harsh on the hair. I find the pins I use now to be very gentle. However, I do not use them often and when I do, I am always eager to take them out at the end of the day because I fear that leaving them in for long amounts of time might be damaging.

I believe I'm the only one who has experienced breakage with Good Days hairpins. I do better by just making a bun and putting a satin scrunci over it.

I love Good Hair Days pins. You can buy similar ones made by Goody. They even carry them at Pathmark. I use them when my hair is in a braid to make a cage.

For my buns, I use a Whirl-a-Style (medium). I first put my hair in a ponytail using an elastic. I never get any breakage from this. I don't use anything else to make my buns.

Also, if you're using any hair accessories, it's best not to rely on them to make your bun. Do the bun first and then add them in. If you use hairsticks to make a bun, it's more likely that you'll take out some hair just sliding the stick in, than if your hair was already in a bun. That way, instead of sliding the stick through the hair and possibly ripping some out to make the stick come out the other side, you can just slide it through the canopy. It'll look exactly the same, but the latter is better for your hair.

Luckily I haven't had any breakage either. I use good hair day pins as well. I dip them in olive oil before I put them in. Sometimes I use the no metal elastics to make a ponytail first and sometimes I don't. I use hair sticks alot becase I don't have to use pins with these.

No breakage so far with buns. I too use the Good Hair Day pins with all of my updos. I haven't tried dipping them in oil though but I'll try that next! Thanks Sengschick for passing along Boadicea's tip!:)
