I would like to know what you all think of carrier oils verses butters.

If you could state your hair type ( ie...3a, 2c...4b) and explain how does the oil type benefit your hair type.

I love the butters better than the liquid oils. I am natural 4a with ( I think) 3a mixed in the nape. Because, I didn't cut my hair ( it fell out ) I can only wear one style ( a pony ). I've got frizz for days. Can't make my 'Lil pony look good. Since the butters are stiff it makes the hair lay better ( after the scarf trick ) I prefer it. I tried to use Olive oil in liquid form. While my hair was damp, I applied the oil directly to my hair. I was great

......... for about 3 minutes and then my hair felt really dry. So, I applied a mixture of Sweet Almond and Avacado Butter and my hair felt great

again.

Next, I am going to try Jojoba liquid oil and see if I get a different rewult.

Your thoughts.......

Re: For All Textures....Which Do You Prefer.......

im a mixture of 3/4 (dont ask for numbers cause I dont know!!!)
I like butters better because they dont leave my hair as greasy...I use them to either hold in moisture or to help my hair lay down.
Oils are good for pretreatments!

Re: For All Textures....Which Do You Prefer.......

I'm 4b relaxed.
I don't know about "butters" but I like using a pomade on my hair after my leave-in, to seal in the moisture. In this way, mny hair isn't greasy and has shine. I'm still experimenting with oils and just bought Keracare Essential Oils. I may use this mainly as a pretreatment, we'll see. I also have massaged my scalp with rosemary and lavender oils. I want to try the Flaxseed oil (as Vevster mentioned in another thread) as a pretreatment also to compare.

Re: For All Textures....Which Do You Prefer.......

I prefer butters. Oils seem to leave my hair oily, without giving as much moisture as butters. I agree with Isis and lsubabiedee that oils are best for pretreatments, instead. I'm a 4b, relaxed.

I havent tried any butters yet. If I decide to, I was thinking about trying Elasta QP Mango Butter and ORS Shea Butter. What is the different in the effects of butters verses oils??? Are butters more moisturizing?

I have relaxed 3c/4a hair and BUTTERS are so greasy for my hair. I love olive oil fromt he megacare line ( see my alubum under products). It is so light and moisturizing without build up or stiffness. It adds such incredible shine. Products like the Profectiv line and Elasta QP mango butter were just GARBAGE

for me!!!

I prefer oils over butters. I usually have to mix butters with oils otherwise butters just sit on my hair.

Butters...Oils do not moisturize long term for me...it feels good as long as my hair is wet when i put it in, then once it's dry, the moisture disappears..I'm 4 a/b

Thanks for the link Blacktresses!

I mix my pure shea butter with coconut oil and that works best for me. My hair type is 4a natural. Before I use it I dampen my hair first with my African Gold braid spray...which works great on my hair whether I'm in braids or not. I also have some emu oil I might try mixing in my next batch.

Re: For All Textures....Which Do You Prefer.......

i hve ralxed 4a/B hair. i love shea butter. my hair just soaks it up. it's a great moisturizer and i also melt it and mix it with honey and evoo for a pre shampoo tretament

Re: For All Textures....Which Do You Prefer.......

I airdryed for the first time using a ready made hair butter (cocoa and shea.) As I was making large braids, I put a bit on each section with leave in conditioner also but I couldnt comb it through , what did I do wrong?

Re: For All Textures....Which Do You Prefer.......

depending on the butter, the butter is really just like a somewhat solidfied form of the oil, which melts into an oil on your hair anyway.

If its a harder butter, you have to use oil to make it softer anyway.

both oils and butters work the same on my hair, i just like the feel of something i can rub into my scalp. other than that, the butters still turn to a oil, or you have to add oil to them. so to me its all the same

[/ QUOTE ] Cocoa butter is a hard butter, Shea butter is a thick butter, it probably would have helped to cut it with lots of oil

Re: For All Textures....Which Do You Prefer.......

Thanks Irresistible, should the consistancy be quite creamy then? The brand is by Black and Beautiful, could I mix it with jasmine oil?

[/ QUOTE ] oh its a pre mixed butter? hmm you would think that would already be thinned some....but yes , you could use any oil....but if jasmine oil is an essential oil then i would only use a little of that for scent , but to thin out the butters i would use a carrier oil, like olive, coconut, sweet almond, shea , etc etc. there are so many of them

any butter that is hard and too thick to be easily spreadable, if you put it in a pot , melt it all ,then stir in oil (plenty) , then let it cool again, it will solidfy again softer

Re: For All Textures....Which Do You Prefer.......

Thanks again girl. Does anyone know if you can you use jasmine oil for pre-treatment shampoos? (its just that I have a big bottle lying around).

Very midly relaxed 3b/c (almost even split), here. I prefer carrier oils because they leave my hair soft and moisturizes whereas butters just sit on top of my hair and are hard to blend in and make my hair look dull. Butters also clump my hair together and make it feel hard.

You also have to be very careful about heating oils/butters. I hear that oil loses it properties when heated. I run warm to hot water in a pot. and allow the butter to site for about 15 minutes and then I use them.

Re: For All Textures....Which Do You Prefer.......

I'm a 3c/4a relaxed and oil do better for me. Butters tend to make my hair "oiler" then the oil itself go figure. The oils I like are Organic's Tea Tree (Soy bean main ingred) and Wonder 8 oil.

Instead of just using a conditioner as a pre-shampoo treatment, Im goin to also apply my mixture of oils with the conditioner. I just bought some ORS shea butter so I will just use that as a moisturizer instead of the oils because the oils have made my hair too shiny but more on the greasy side.

I have never used a butter, it okay to apply butters on wet and dry hair???
