Flat ironing

Why does my hair look dry after I flat iron it, has anyone else ever experienced this? It may seem like a stupid question, but I'm new to doing my own hair.

as most people are gonna run in here and tell you, try using a heat protectant and afterwards mist with a finishing spray for more shine.

Do you use a moisturizer or creme before you flat iron? My hair looks dry when I don't apply a little bit of moisturizer like ORS olive oil or shea butter before I flat iron. Don't for get to use a heat protectant.
