I would like to know the answer to this question too.
For my hair, I like flat-irons better. I noticed that my hair (mainly split ends) "falls out" when I use a hotcomb (on the stove, no matter how warm/hot the iron is).
And whenever I use a flat-iron (with the plugs & without at the salon), I have very little breakage.
What I wonder about is the difference between using a flat iron and an electric straightening comb on relaxed hair. I've always heard that you shouldn't use straightening combs on relaxed hair; on the other hand, it's ok to use an electric flat iron, so long as you don't overdo it. I'm wondering if an electric comb on a moderate setting would really do too much damage. What does everyone think? What's the difference between the electric comb and the flat iron when it comes to relaxed hair? I really am curious about this. Is your hair relaxed, or natural, LaLakersGirl?
I'd like to know the answers to those questions too.
My hair is currently relaxed. Flat-irons get my hair straight with less damage (my hair type is 4A/3B). Hot-combs (heated by the stove) get my hair straight, but does major damage to my ends and makes them look uneven & frizzy. Maybe it's just my hair, because not everyone's hair responds the same to hot-combs & flat-irons.
My mother is relaxed and uses a hot-comb (heated by the stove) practically every single day and is still keeping her length; you can actually notice that her hair is growing.
On the other hand, you just reminded me that I have an electric hot-comb that I haven't used in a while. I'm going to test how my hair reacts to using it tomorrow.

Interesting! Maybe it has something to do with the strength of one's hair? Or maybe texture: fine/medium/coarse, or whatever.
I am a natural 4a/b and i LOVE the flat iron. When my stylist flat irons my hair its nice nd bone str8. And i usually done in one time (instead of having to press it over and over over again).
Besides the pressing comb pulls out my hair. I can hear it and feel it

I have always hot pressed my hair because of how thick it is. I wanted to know if one is better than the other and what are the advantages??

I get a straighter press with a pressing comb vs. a flat iron. But I prefer flatironing because it's quicker.
I have to agree with LALakersGirl. My hair ends break and split and are very uneven when I hotcomb. My hair strands are fine/medium so that may have somthing to do with it. I also loose thickness by strands breaking if I hotcomb too much. I don't seem to have any problems with a flatiron except that my hair is not as straight and thus reverts quicker.
