"Hair grows in a clean healthy scalp" quote from a brochure in the salon I frequented as a teen. Since that time, I've washed once or twice a week and have had good results. My scalp tends to be very oily, so it drives me crazy when it isn't clean.

I voted shampooing. I think it grows better and to its full potential if the the scalp is clean and free of bacteria, fungi, etc. Other stuff you don't see there, but could be there.

I have had a much better scalp condition since I started washing more frequently. My hair grows at a decent rate. and I retain growth too.

I'd have to say wetting the scalp if I had to choose is just as good if not better than shampooing. When I had wet & wavy box braids in my hair for 5 months I just rinsed it in the shower every morning so that it kept the wet & wavy look and throughout the day if it got dry I'd wet it with water again or spray braid spray. My hair grew sooo much, and I virtually did not use shampoo for 5 months. I'm thinking of doing this again, like this weekend, again. I said no more extensions but I'd like to water my hair & scalp daily like a plant and let it flourish and that's the only way I can do it, I feel, without looking a mess and without breakage from manipulation. (calling my African lady...)

I think everyones hair grows at its own individual pace weather its washed or filthy. No water or frequent shampoo has stopped the homeless from growing their long dreds.:look:

True, true, true! :lachen:

A clean scalp is best. But I believe the manipulation of the scalp is just as important...getting that blood circulating is a good thing! KWIM?

I am beginning to be convinced that a combination [and balance] of washing to moisturizing is key. For some shampoo is drying, so moisturizing with a good conditioner works fine. As a natural, I gave up shampoos and just rinsed my hair daily, CWing every 3 or 4 days and my hair grew and was healthy. The stimulation of the roots, scalp helps. Water is a moisturizer and hair's best friend, so I definitely think there's something to this theory that water is our natural growing element.

I agree 100% my hair is strives on water my hair thanks me for it, if not everyday, every other day I co wash and its a huge difference.

I think it's both. I've been rinsing almost daily for the past 5 months and my hair is always soft and looks soft. I've been getting decent growth as well. I don't use shampoo but I also don't use a lot of products so my scalp stays clean with the daily rinsing.

From what I've read in various places, I would have thought it was cleaning the scalp that was important, since getting rid of dirt and grease would allow the scalp to breathe, as well as scalp stimulation from the massaging whilst shampooing.

I wash my scalp every couple of days with either Giovanni Tea Tree shampoo or Eucalyptus Castille Soap

It's both in my experience.

If I co-wash daily and using styling products (like a shine serum as my leave-in) then I shampoo daily as well as co-wash.

If I use conditioner as a leave-in that has cones I wash daily, skip the co-wash, and use a co-wash conditioner as a leave-in.

If I use a natural leave-in like an oil, I just co-wash daily, then wash weekly.

In all three scenarios relaxed, texlaxed and natural the daily moisture was key. However, keep the scalp clean and clear of build-up that would choke the growth daily moisture via water can promote is also essential.

Well, I'm obviously no expert, but from what I've learned thus far, it seems like it's the keeping your scalp moist.

The clean scalp via daily shampooing and infusing moisture via oil rinsing and conditioning is what does it for me.

Miss AJ, you are a daily shampooer? Daily shampooers are a RARE breed around here:lachen:. I shampoo every other day since I found shampoos that don't dry my hair out. How long have you been doing this and what shampoo do you use?

TIA!

I think my hair is happy since I gave up sulfites. I've been using WEN for a few months and my hair feels happier.

I use the cleansing conditioner 1-2 times per week and nightly I spray a mix of wen water and oil on my hair/twists.

Now I'm looking at finding a way to incorporate amla and other podwers to the rotation.

So I THINK my answer is that washing/cleaning helps promote growh and wetting/moisture helps retain.

Lol if not daily then every other day, but I CANNOT go longer than 4-5 days without washing or I start freaking out lol.. I workout 5 days a week and lately I've been using gels and sometimes even spritz so I have to wash that crap out. I use the NTM Cream Lather shampoo, i've got a tube of L'Oreal EverPure shampoo to use up but today I used my Tresemme Natural Vitamin C & E shampoo and conditioner. The poo gets the hair very clean but I oil rinse right before conditioning, and I sealed with grapeseed oil today and my hair feels awesome.

i think keeping the scalp and hair clean is essential, but as long as it's not done via sls shampoos.

however, once the scalp is clean (via ayurvedic powder pastes/rinses/teas; co washing), from what i've learned on here, keeping it moist is essential for faster growth.

so i cowash almost daily, use my amla/brahmi powders twice a week, and spritz my hair/scalp daily_

faster growth = scalp manipulation. wetting it is beneficial for increasing moisture, but i think the more you manipulate your scalp, the faster hair will grow.

I'm planning on seeking a more moisturizng SF shampoo so I can start pooing daily. I'm starting to love shampoo. :look:

I remember one of my sisters going through a period of..I don't even know what to call that period of her life, but she did not wash or manipulate her hair for almost a year. When she snapped out of whatever she was in she had my mom give her a touch-up and OMG her hair grew like crazy. The previous time I saw her hair out it was neck/shoulder length. Her hair was at her bra strap and thicker than a mutha after that touch-up. After that you couldn't tell her hair can't grow from a dirty scalp.

When I used to just wet my hair/scalp daily with water and go, I got fantastic new growth. That doesn't fit into my lifestyle much, anymore but I hope time permits that this summer.

For me a clean scalp works better.

Yeah the hair will grow but I can tell it's really absorbing everything good I put on it after a wash day. Using something that helps cleanse the scalp, the actual action of using my fingers to gently remove debris and dirt, massaging the scalp and helping increase blood flow.

Nope, simply keeping the scalp moist wouldn't do a darn thing for me especially since the hair products/oils/concoctions I use will naturally build up and I prefer to work on a clean canvas.

I asked the question a/b other races hair growing longer on average than blacks is it b/c of frequent washing. I have yarn braids and decided to test that theory. I have been co-washing 3 times a a week and at 6 weeks, I have nearly 2 inches of new growth. My hair averages not quite 1/2 inch per month so this is significant growth.
