I know. I know. Trims are not necessary, yada yadda. But, does anyone see a difference in how fast their hair grows after a good trim? If so, what do you think causes this?

My hair grows at the same rate trimmming or no trimming. But after I get rid of the thin breaking ends, of course my hair will retain more length

So are you saying that your hair follicles are aware that you just trimmed your ends and push out hair faster?

It's the same for me, my hair always gets longer after trimming. I have to trim every 8 weeks or my hair stops growing. And you know I'm talking about retaining length here..

I love getting trims. I won't say it makes my hair grow faster, but I know I won't have to worry about my length breaking off on the ends.

I have been telling my sis this for the longest! No, your hair doesn't grow faster, per se... but it does grow BETTER. You retain length easier and it is much healthier after getting rid of split/damaged ends.

I didn't start gaining length UNTIL I started trimming! And that's the truth, Ruth!

I never noticed my hair growing any faster after a trim, but I have noticed that I retain more length if I get regular dustings.

Same here.

hmmm...interesting... I havent had my hair trimmed since Oct and I didnt even let the stylist take that much off. I was using the Cathy Howse method of no trims. i figured that the part that needed tobe cut would fall off on its own and that the healthy hair would remain anyway.

I dont know how it works but it always has a noticeable little growth spurt EVERYTIME. It was the same for my sister when I gave her a trim..a few weeks later you could see the difference.
(Even when I cut my nails they grow back quickly)
Anyway if I dont trim my hair it will start knotting up.

I ONLY trim according to the moon. It may sound crazy but my mom always have and I naturally picked up on it too. It's a fact that the moon encourages growth and during the full moon our hair grows the most. Same applies for farming check out the almanac it's in there. If you cut your hair during a full moon (growth) you'll notice less growth versus cutting during a new moon. This year we have the blue moon which is at the end of the month that means more of a growth spurt this month. I promise I'm not some Erika Badu wannabe with all this moon talk I'm speaking on years of personal experience.

There is a lunar thread here about that very topic. Several of the ladies are going by the moon phases for haircare.

This is interesting. I don't doubt your experiences.
I would love to read some scientific data on why this happens, which I'm sure is available. It sounds like something happens whether one cuts, trims or dusts the ends.

Actually, I thought that everyones hair did the same thing ! I only do micro trims

It's too risky for me to see what happens if I wait a long time to trim. I trim whenever I get a touch up- about every 2 weeks. This is the longest I've gone w/o trimming since I'm in braids (4 mths when I take them out.) I don't do my own trims.

Hey Flipter: I know you are correct, for the of month of July 17-30th is a good time to dust or trim your ends per the Farmers Almanac well they state "mow to increase growth" your grass it will grow back faster also for your hair. Just try and see what happens only a dusting of hair.. I am going to try it

Go to the Farmers' Almanac under best days Good Luck

I still would like to know how and why this happens. This would include cutting by the lunar method. How exactly does the cutting the ends of our hair, which we have learned are dead cells, cause growth spurts of hair out of the scalp, as some have experienced? What is the exact process? Does anyone know?

I agree, it is interesting. Here is the Lunar cycle thread called, "Who Uses The Lunar Cycles For Haircare?"

. We just had the New Moon on July 17 and we'll have a rare 2nd Full Moon on July 31, also called the Blue Moon.
