Has anyone had this experience? I wore clip ins for an hour or so around the house to get used to them, took them out, went to bed, and my hair has lots of splits and feels "hard".

I'm wondering what the hell happened.

I don't really know what happened and don't understand how you could go from no visible splits to visible splits in such a short time, unless you were raking a brush or seamed fine-tooth comb through your hair. So chances are you already had the splits and maybe whatever balm you use (moisturizer, sealant) hides them by creating a coating that temporarily gives a healthy appearance. And it sounds like the extensions sucked the moisture from your hair hence taking off that mask and leaving your hair bare and without moisture. And dry hair is hard hair which is what you witnessed.

Yes I always have splits, I have very fine hair and have battled splits my entire life, natural, relaxed, airy dry, roller set, bunning, trimming, s and d, you name it, ive tried it. Nothing helps my hair get longer than bsb length. I have changed Regimens often and have found one that works. A few weeks ago i felt i Had overmoistuirzed my hair, making it weaker. That's why I'm so surprised my hair feels brittle and looks split right now. Maybe it was over moisturized before?

I don't ever use rake brushes or fine tooth combs, I only use bone combs with wide teeth. This is my first go with extensions and they are clip ins.

However now they look worse...I'm sure what I was using coated it a little, but the length feels soft, but harder if that makes sense, like a soft brittle feeling. I remoisturized with the same products this morning and it still feels different. You would think that if I coated it again it would go back to how it felt and looked before, but it still looks brittle. If this is what my hair looks like with no coating,that would bring me some relief instead of thinking the extensions damaged it. I bought the extensions plus brand and its too much money to throw down the drain...

Nonie is there any way to reduce the amount of moisture absorbed by the extensions?

Also I'm wondering if using Saran Wrap is similar to direct heat.

@abcd09, I've never had the issue you're having. I was just using logic and what I've heard others say that extensions rob hair of moisture. I use NO moisturizer when I wear extension braids. I do use human hair extensions and I wear them for at least 1.5 years straight going bare and my hair does fine. I wash twice a week and one of those washes includes a DC. I finish each wash with an ACV rinse and I baggy nightly. I just treat my hair exactly as I do when I don't have extensions and not combing my hair (meaning no product, wash twice a week, baggy) and they don't seem to do any harm to my hair.

I am not familiar with the extensions you used. I'm sure I've seen them before in a discussion but I can't remember whether that brand is human hair or synthetic hair. I only use human hair extensions and only in braiding, and they don't make my hair drier. It's ages since I used synthetic hair and I used to use grease back then when I used synthetic so knew nothing about moisture nor was I as familiar with my hair as I am today. So I don't know what effect it had on my hair.

I believe micro-ring extensions are similar to these so maybe if I call out people who've used them as well as people who used clip-ins, they can come and shed some light on this and share their experiences:

@eyunka,

I Agree with @Nonie .

The clip-ons tangle the hair, and sucks the moisture out of the hair....especially in the nape area....and especially natural hair clip-ons. That is the reason I stopped wearing them. I also started getting breakage in the areas where I was clipping the metal clips onto my hair.

I have no solutions. I just stopped using them.

*CherryPie* Thanks. I was thinking of doing flat twists for my hair underneath since I can't cornrow, instead of leaving the hair out. I hope to get some use out of the EPRT. Did you leave your real hair out? How many times did you wash?

I left my real hair out...and took them out most nights, and they were still drying to my hair. My main issue with them was the tangling. Because I took them out at night, my wash schedule didn't change.
