Ever thought of making your own relaxer??

Has making your own relaxer ever crossed your mind... or am I the only crazy one:lachen:!

I was thinking I would get some lye, shea butter, cocoa butter, and other things/chemicals to buffer it and give it a go... or maybe not. I still don't know yet.

Wow, that's pretty out there if you ask me. LOL! I think getting the percentages accurate and doing it safely is a bit risky.

Basic relaxers are so cheap, you can buy tubs of it and make your own custom mixes with it.

But I'm a natural so I will have my biases - wonder what other's think...

I used to think about that. I would have loved to have made one that didn't burn my scalp.

I remember hearing how people used to make their own relaxers back in the days (1940s-60's) but you have to be careful because lye ain't no joke! If the proportions aren't right, there is a possibility of major burns.

That's probably the main reason I want to make my own, and secondly the dry hair issue that happen sometimes after relaxers.

YES! It would be the only way I would go back to relaxing. It'd be 50% extra virgin coconut oil, 25% Aussie Moist, 15% Qhemet Biologics (AOHC & BRBC), 9.5% Organix Shea Butter conditioner, and .5% lye

Of course, this is just a fantasy. I would never actually do it unless I got a chemist degree - which ain't gonna happen.

You have brought me out of lurker mode with this one! Please do not do this. Lye is nothing to be played with. Like you said it is a crazy idea! Leave the relaxer making to the professionals...just my two cents

ETA: And that's my answer to if I've ever thought of it, as well as if you should try it.

If you are serious, i say you find a chemist or two that can help you.i do not think you should be mixing up relaxer in your kitchen by yourself! You might be able to formulate something really great not just for you but for others! Its not that bad of an idea to have a forum member make a relaxer what with all of the knowlege and natural product lines we have now. im surprised no one has tried to get that relaxer box money. *hint hint ladies* them boxes are still sellin by the droves. You betta get on it!

If you want to lose all of your hair I say go for it! However, I think it would be easier and safer to just shave it off instead of melting it off :(

Whoo Lawd you are better than me!!! LOL! If you mix this up, can you test it on some yaki or something first? LOL. Perhaps a lacefront? I just am afraid for you to be your own guinea pig with this.

I wouldn't try it on my hair first... maybe some harvested hair from the comb/brush or a HH wig/weave

Exactly, test it on some other hair first.

The only problem with that is a lacefront/harvested hair from a comb can't tell you what kind of effect the mixture is going to have on your scalp. All it'll tell you is if it works on hair, and that's not worth much, since even Nair straightens hair.

I wonder if the pH of the mixture would somehow indicate if it would burn alot on the scalp or not?

I could see someone formulating their own relaxer if they were starting their own haircare line, but a homemade relaxer?

The fallout from that would be a hot mess!

those relaxers have some powerful ingredients in there that should be dealt with by a professional. Relaxers go thru a lot of stages in the development phase by professional chemists to make sure the balance of chemicals are right and it won't burn your head off your neck. not really something i'd even think about to make on my own

I made one in college for my chem class. It was dangerous as hell! My lap partner got one of the ingredients on her shirt and it burned a hole in it and burned her skin. We did manage to successfully make one, but after seeing how dangerous the ingredients were I wouldn't recommend it. It's funny, b/c I was sooo appalled at how harsh the chemical were, but I didn't hesitate to go get my touch up the next day :lachen:

Consider the worst case scenario of your proposal – chemical burns, scarring and permanent hair loss. This ride may not be worth the fall in the long run. Don’t do it, it's not worth it.
