Ethnic Hairstyles for interviewing?

I am considering getting back into the job market again after being a SAHM for years and I've already applied somewhere. I have been dying to get my hair braided for the summer, but I am hesitant to have what may be considered an "ethnic style" on an interview. I don't know much about those who will be interviewing me, except they are white. Any suggsestions?

I had micro braids put into a bun for my interview. It was at an accounting firm. I got the job. I think as long as it's neat you should be fine.

There is no reason not to feel professional at job related meetings. Why not put your hair in a bun? Also, it depends on where you are trying to get a job. Some places are more conservative than others.

Also, I find Blacks are more worried about my hair than White people. Whites always loved my curly fro back in the day!

i think when you get into multi colored weaves or "loud" hair dos is when you get into trouble. i know on one of the boards i hang out at a woman said that at a few places she worked at ethnic hair dos (like afros and braids) were kinda frowned upon cause they were so conservative. sad but true. i think braids is the best idea.

I'd say wear a neat bun or French roll. Your hair doesn't have to be straight, but neat and pulled back is best. I know it's sad, but I think braids would be looked down upon, especially bigger/longer ones and cornrolls.

I'd like braids also for the summer, but the "braided look" isn't welcome everywhere---the bun is.

I agree with Brownie. Being in the corporate world everyday, I see some of the looks that we woman of color get whenever our hair is not strait or in a neat updo. You can never judge how other people are going to react, and you don't want to interview for a really good position that you like and then if you don't get the job, have that lingering "what if" in the back of your mind. My advice, be conservative, lay off the braids, "GET THE JOB", and then show up with your braids and let them deal with it after you have already signed your HR forms. Good luck on the interview.

ITA with both posts. I've learned this back in 1999. We were told that when going for the job interview, we should never wear our hair braided because white people would get the impression that this person may not get the job. Is it because of our hairstyle that offends them or what!?! Go for something that's more professional like wearing a hairpiece, or a bun. Come back to wearing your braids after you're hired for the job. BTW, you should never tell anyone "good luck" when going for a job interview. I've been told of this from my brother and mom.

Melodee, I believe that you'll get the job. I want to say is for you to do your best on your interview, and call back or send a letter to the person in hire thanking him/her for the opportunity to be interviewed for the job. Much success to you and believe that you'll be the right person for hire.

I think that some women go overboard with their weave hairstyles. There are braids that are cute, nice, and simple, and there are braids that are big and bulky, untamed, ungroomed, and just out there. Those (non-blacks mostly) who don't know much ado about braids period will judge ALL braided styles as bad, or even call them "dread locks". Others know the difference between neat and hot mess.
