Dry Hair Remedies

This winter season is zapping all of the moisture out of my hair. My ends have been crispy for two weeks now. Normally I would just break out the scissors and start cutting away but, now I don’t know what to do. I just joined the 12” of natural hair challenge and I’m trying not to over trim for the next year.

Can someone suggest a product or a routine to combat the dryness?

*My hair is nappy, color treated, and about 6” to 8” all over.

I would like to add that I am very scissor happy. I have cut off at least three inches of my hair since April. Trimming is usually my quick solution to dry ends so I don't have to deal with them.

Any Ideas?

I found in Carolyn Gray's book is after washing your hair. Slather on the oil of your choice, hot oils or an oil that does well in your hair. Don't rinse add your favorite conditioner and get under a heating cap or hooded dryer for 30 mins. However, I stay under for 25 mins. This remedy has done wonders for my hair. It comes out straight, soft, bouncy and well mositurized. I do this every other week. My ends have not looked better. Hope this helps you.

I've seen lots of ladies on this site with gorgeous hair that zap dryness by applying vaseline to their ends. I know it's considered taboo for the scalp, but it seems to work great on their ends. I'm about to begin trying this on my little girl's hair.

What products do you currently use and when do you use them? Also, how are you wearing your hair?

When I was natural, I wore two-strand twists a lot. In fact, I have worn them with texturized hair too. They seem to help, but I got tired of them.

Clarifying with ACV, applying a good moisturizing conditioner and concentrating on the ends should help. Also, air drying would be beneficial. I like mixing shea oil with my conditioner (Elucence Moisture Balancing) and sitting under the dryer for 20 min. I always air dry.

i agree, i add oil (carrot, olive, whichever you like) to your regular conditioner. it doesn't have to be a deep conditioner. a regular moisturizing conditioner + oil IS a deep conditioning treatment:) make sure you clarify once or twice a month. after washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo you will notice that a deep treatment works even better. hot oil treatments are very good too. if you add one of these two in your routine your hair should be fine.

I lightly mist my ends at night with plain water then cover with a plastic cap. In the morning, I conditioner wash or rinse and use Elucence as my leave-in. I just recently started using my Elucence again and now I notice how it's conditioning effects last longer than other products'.

Please don't start cutting away your hair just because it's crispy. The crispiness is only temporary. All of the above recommendations can work to restore the moisture to your hair very quickly.

You're not wearing your hair out loose in harsh temperatures are you? If it's cold and dry you've got to moisturize those ends & keep them tucked away. It's not just the outdoor air that does a job on our hair but the dry indoor heat is almost as bad if not worse. I'm keeping my hair either flattwisted, in two french braids, or my version of a bun for all of this winter. Fortunately I live in a mild climate where I can rinse it everday or else I'd be done for. Have you tried just spritzing the ends of your hair with a water/condtioner solution? That would keep your scalp dry so you don't freeze when you go outside.

Isis,
I promise - I will not clip away at my hair. I've decided to see just how long my hair can grow. So I have hidden my barber sheers.

jetcitygirl,
I have been so bad this winter. I have not been tucking under my ends to keep them healthy. I have also been spending a lot of time sitting in front of a space heater.

I am normally very good to my hair (except for my snip-snip scissors habit) I've been neglecting my napps the past two weeks. Tomorrow I will pamper my hair.

Thank you everyone for the quick responses. I appreciate all of your help.
