Dry Ends

I'm having a problem with my ends becoming very dry and crispy. I'm thinking of cutting to a TWA.

Does anyone know how I can keep my ends moisturized and healthy? I rinse everyday followed by Sebastians potion #9 or 911 leave in. As of now I have braids until I can get my ends under control.

Your hair looks so beautiful in your album don't cut it into a TWA! Have you thought about a cramy leave-in instead of the 911, like Keracare of Loreal's Nature's Therapy Leave-In or Eulecence Moisture Balance Condtioner. Also, the winter may be what's keeping your ends feeling dry. I also like ORS Carrot Oil on damp hair to provide moisture for my ends.

If your ends are dry because of the weather:

When I lived in KS (talk about cold!) I had good results putting Blue Magic Coconut Oil on my ends. (Ingred: Petrolatum, Coconut Oil, Fragrance). It doesn't get that cold in SC, so I've been slacking...
But I used it when I was natural and after I got a relaxer and it worked fine. But I never wore my hair "out" with that greasy stuff on it.

I was checking out your products and saw some that made my hair feel rough and dry: Infusium, 911 and Sebastian 9. Some good styling gels with minimal crunch are ORS Twist & Lock, Fantasia w/ Sparkle Lites and Thermasilk Shaine & Shape.

I have heard that ORS Shea butter is good for natural hair. You should type it in the search past of the screen to hear all the wonderful reviews. The way they talk about it makes me want to go natural. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't really like creamy leave ins, either I apply too much or it never absorbs into my hair. It sit on top of my hair which leaves me with whitehead. The ORS also did nothing for me. Where would I find the other products you mentioned?
BTW I brought my own colour. I used clariol Textures and Tones in Bronze. I think it's #6BV?

Do you think petrolatum is too heavy for natural hair? My hair is very thin and fine.

My hair is on the fine/medium end of the scale, too. The Blue Magic is very heavy. It's basically coconut scented Vaseline! I only used it on the last inch of my hair. I didn't let it get anywhere near my scalp because I knew my hair would be stuck to my head within seconds... And I wore my hair slicked back in a bun.

Do you think the coloring made your hair dry? Some ladies(me included) can't take any type of coloring in their hair. Also I 2nd the creamy leave-in mixed with a little oil. I use a mixture of PM superchaged and Pantene Pro-V Smooth and sleek mixed with some oil(I use a 1/2 teaspoon of my own pomade melted). I then follow this with alot of Carol's Daughter Healthy Hair Butter. My hair is 'white' when I'm done...but is soaks in as it dries.

Hi there Destinee, this may be a long shot but when was your last trim? Have you ever thought that the dry ends might be scab hair? I have heard about this and I really think it was my issue. You have beautiful hair by the way. /images/graemlins/wink.gif When I first got my hair cut down to a twa, I could not tell the texture difference between new growth and ends. I did the chop in May/02 down to about 2-3 inches...I now have about 6 inches of hair on my head(minus about 3 trims of 1/2" or more /images/graemlins/drunk.gif) I have been pulling on my twists for the past 2 weeks and have noticed a SIGNIFICANT difference between my ends and my roots down to about 5 inches of the length. The last 1/2" or so was rough, hard and DRY. /images/graemlins/crazy.gif I have been trying to wait to see if it was just the winter weather or if I was just neglecting my ends. I couldn't wait until Spring for a trim so the past 2 weeks I have been experimenting w/ shea butter on my ends, Hot 6 oil on my ends, dipping my ends in water and putting shea, oil, or glycerine spritz on them to hold some moisture in during the day...nothing has worked. So tonight, I whipped out my trimming scissors and went to work on them. I took about 1/2"-3/4" off each twist and I am back in business. My ends are soft, untangled, unknotted and smooth. I 'think' all the scab hair is gone now, we'll see in the morning when my hair is completely dry. Saying all that, it may just be scab hair. HTH! /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I had my hair trimmed when I got my colour on 12.28.03, before that I had 2 inches off in Aug 2002. I do notice a difference when it's trimmed but that dry crispy feeling always comes back. /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif I did trim a bit off each of my braids. I'm going to try mositurizing my end before bed and in the mornings to see if that will make a difference. I have a rosewater glycerine mix that I may use.

The funny thing is after my colour my hair was really soft. I've always had some dryness,but as of lately my ends are terrible. HHB does nothing for me. Is it supposed be creamy? Mine is very pastey.

Mine is pastey...but I don't use it alone. I use it to seal in the moisture from the water, pomade and leave-in. By itself it does nothing for my hair.

What difference has anyone noticed using a creamy leave-in conditioner versus a liquid leave-in conditioner?

Ms. Kenesha - What are your thoughts on Loreal Nature's Therapy Leave in conditioner? How does it compare to Keracare's ? I have used Loreal's Mega Moisture conditioning creme and liked the results.

Now you know I agree with everyone else's about your beautiful hair! /images/graemlins/grin.gif I also love how you are putting together your photo journal. /images/graemlins/smile.gif If you can, keep the braids a little while longer and then just clip the frayed ends. I also mentioned on another post that I use the Beverly Johnson's Constant Care for Ends and it put's moisture on the ends. Olive oil works well also.

PErsonally I like the Keracare leave in better, it's thicker and seemed to give me better results than the Loreal, but I still have a lot of the Loreal left so I'll probably give that one away or use it on my lil sis.

I plan to keep my braids until the summer, I'm trying to leave it alone. I did end up clipping the ends. I am rinsing in the morinings and applying CPR hairdress. I'm going to try that and see what happens.

The color is a chemical, so it has an effect like a light light relaxer. That's why you see so many products advertised for white women with color damaged hair.

You look like you have good products:
Fantasia IC Gel
Aura Elixir (is like the leave-in conditioner people are recommending)

Maybe if you add a little oil to your routine it will help.
A few drops of jojoba or shea Butter/olive oil massaged on your dry parts of your hair every day with an olive oil/deep conditioner treatment one night a week. (Get very damp hair: put in olive oil and deep conditioner very generously and comb through well and go to sleep. Wash out with conditioner the next morning.)
