Dry, dry, dry hair - Las Vegas trip

We are just getting settled in after coming back from Las Vegas (work trip for me & DH's birthday). I could not take most of my products on the plane (FAA guidelines) so I tried to make due with moisturizer & coconut oil. Wow!!! My hair dried out so fast!!! I am texlaxed & transitioning to natural. I did a rollerset before the trip. It was over 100 degrees for a few days and my hair was just a mess. I intended to pin curl at night to maintain the curls but just pulled it all back with moisturizer & oil. Even my husband commented while we were getting dressed to go out that my hair looked dry.

I ended up wearing my hair pinned up everyday not only because of the heat/dryness but it got pretty windy at night too.

For anyone going to Vegas, be sure to pack as much moisturizer as you can take on the plane. I wish I had packed enough to use at least twice daily. And take some hair pins since it's very windy at night.

My friend/coworker is natural (4a) and her hair loved Vegas. She cowashes daily & uses Aveda "Be Curly". The front is texlaxed with nickel sized curls while the rest is tight 4a spirals. Her hair looked great each day.

Girl, I had the same problem while in Vegas and San Diego. Some of my stuff that works great here in the humid south didn't work there at all. It would be nice to have some ladies in Vegas or California or Arizona (drier areas) to chime in about what works well for them.

I went to Vegas last month and the weather hadn't gotten that hot yet. It was around 80 degrees. However, I ended up cowashing every morning and wearing a wash and go to keep moisture in my hair.

I will be going to vegas next week so is there anything that I need to prep my hair for besides the heat?

I was limited to only a few ounces of product (FAA guidelines); however, if you can bring your products (or buy more in Vegas) I recommend wash & go styles which will be dry by evening when you are inside the cold hotels & casinos.

I was in Vegas a while back and my hair was soooooooooo dry. It was terrible. I was co-washing daily as well but I didn't have enough leave in to last through the trip.

I just came back from California and my hair is feeling terrible. I am going to clarify and load up with some good moisture products. I am also going to hold off on the cones for a few days.

I think for anyone going out there get a good moisturizer and load up your hair. If you can stand it daily co-washing is helpful. The beauty is with the heat is dries completely in a few hours.

Vegas is dry just like NM so I am prepared. I am driving in for the convention so I will have ample products. Um I need to pm you about your trip. I am staying after the convention and dh will fly in so we can celebrate our anniversary!!! I hope you guys had a great time inspite of the hair situation. Q

Yes, I would wash and go in the morning and then it would be dry within an hour or so with the heat outside.

Also, you can bring more hair products with you, just not in your carry-on luggage. Pack those bags and check the luggage, cuz I know I be bringing my hair products with me whenever I travel.

OK, yeah, see this is what I would do. Cowash then leave in some of the conditioner (I didn't have moisturizer with me either). My hair stayed soft and moisturized till the next morning.

Thanks!!! It was a great trip especially since my company paid for most of it. We stayed at the MGM Signature which was very nice.

We are looking into staying at the Venetian. I just need some info on places to go that's if we leave our room. :look: Q

That's the problem, we avoid checking luggage at all costs due to having lost luggage so many times. The last time we checked luggage was years ago for our honeymoon since we could not fit 3 weeks worth of clothes/shoes/toiletries into our carryon bags.

My larger carryon almost didn't make it to Vegas since I had to gate check it and I was never asked my destination (layover). My laptop was in my small carryon. Thankfully I kept asking for a claim ticket (which I never got) and that sent the gate crew person running to correct his mistake.

The Venetian is gorgeous. We stayed there on our first trip to Vegas.
For parties try Rain or Ghost Bar at the Palms, Voodoo lounge at Rio or Rum Jungle (forgot the hotel).

For food there are too many places to even list. We went to Koi - sushi (in Plant Hollywood), Ruth Chris steak house (work event), Nob Hill for the lobster pot pie (in MGM) and we wanted to go to Emeril's Fish House (MGM) but it was all booked until really late. The Bellagio has a great breakfast buffet!

Queeny, there is a nice little lounge that plays 90's and current R&B music (or at least they play that on Thursday night) inside the Bellagio Hotel called "Caramel." Ya'll might want to check that out. I went and it was really nice. I was singing En Vogue and SWV at the top of my lungs. It was a really nice and laid back atmosphere. :look:

If DH lets you get away for a bit, also, might I suggest Stripper 101 class. It was fun, like a cardio striptease-type dealie, and the price of admission even includes a free drink. I'm sure he may appreciate some of the new moves after class. See stripper101.com for more details. :look:

Oh now see that's a mess. I would be pissed if my luggage got lost. :wallbash:

I have resorted to packing a change of clothes, toiletries & pajamas in a carryon just in case my checked bags are lost, if I know I have to check luggage. I have had checked luggage lost at least 10 times on different airlines. Once Delta even brought my checked bag to my dad's house but it was the WRONG BAG.:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash: My bag was lost again on the way back to NYC. I did eventually get that checked bag but I had to do without it for a few days and I had to borrow materials for my mock trial course since I had packed them in the checked bag.

I just got back from Vegas last week and I wore protective styles the entire time. Dry, desert heat and black hair do not mix!:nono:

Anyone going to Vegas, go and see Zumanity! I loved it.:yep:

Uh you do know who you are posting to right? :look: Um I might be able to teach them a thing or two. But thanks for the club rec. I just want to make sure we have some fun. We are already planning on going to a chapel to renew our vows!!! Q

I live in AZ - I think the heat can help or hurt your hair depending on your regimen. My first winter here w/ my hair relaxed my nape broke off BADLY - but now I've figured it out.

It's really important (like deadly important) to seal you hair out here. When I travel, I have a set of little bottles ( I bought at CVS I think, but you can find them anywhere. I have two small spray bottles, and a little pot with a lid. I put a filtered water, glycerine, aloe vera and saa mix in one spray bottle - my oil mix in the other ( just a blend of random oils like jojoba, sweet almond etc) and in the little pot I mix NTM, Lacio Lacio and castor oil.

It's all the same stuff I would use at home - and I follow the same moisturizing routine - spritz with water mix, apply creamy leave in to ends, seal with oil mix concentrating on ends.

If you want to wear your hair out - try flat ironing/ styling at home with Sabino Moisture block or another anti humectant - this will help seal moisture into your hair, so it won't need so much on the trip, and you can pack less. HTH!

:lachen: Well, I stand corrected then. Congratulations on renewing those vows. That's beautiful. :)

I stayed at the Venetian...talk about an great hotel! Girl, there's so much to do close to the Venetian and you won't need to leave the hotel if you don't want to. There's a mall right across the street and The Wynn has the super high end stores there if being a big baller is your thing (we just looked)...lol. Be sure to check out that Tao restaurant and Delmonico's (Emril's restaurant) was off the hook. Next time I'm in vegas, I will be at the Venetian, no doubt about it.

There is a Sephora next door, so, if you must grab a product or two, you can. There is an Aveda in Fashion Mall across the street too.

Thanks for the tips! I'm going to Las Vegas in August and it's supposed to be something like 100 - 120 degrees (or close to it!) so I am really concerned about what to do with my hair. I thought about wearing it curly, but then I'll have the whole dry thing going on. I could pack a small bottle of Kinky Curly in my purse and the large jar in my luggage, but if my luggage gets delayed I'm screwed. :ohwell: I thought about flat ironing my hair, but I'm not sure if this will work in the heat. According to your post, it seems like flat ironing might be the best option. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Should I try to wash and flat iron when I get to the hotel? I did this once at the beach and the salt air zapped all the moisture from my hair which was a hot mess for the remainder of my trip!
