Don't visit Mexico if you don't want frizz....

Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

I just returned from a girlfriend's wedding there over the weekend and she warned me before coming over 'your hair will frizz here, be careful' Ba humbug I said, trotting over to my faithful Dominican salon the night before flying for a rollarset and wrap, knowing how straight they make my hair which has stood through misty NY days and nightclub dancing and sweat.

I travelled with my hair wrapped, further 'protecting' my precious straight hair. Checked into the hotel and my room and I took off my scarf. Hair looked great

. So while walking around my room unpacking etc I noticed that out of the corners of my eyes I was starting to see my hair by the side of my face

I contined doing what I was doing but noticed I could see it more and more. I thought 'no' and walked to the mirror. My bangs switched in minutes from sleek to a thatched roof

I couldn't believe it!

She was right

My bangs were soooo frizzed and the rest of my hair was frizzing faster and faster. So much for the faith in the Dominican rollarset

For the 2 days before the wedding, each morning after unwrapping my hair, it would be semi straight but within 1 hour it poofed up again
laugh.gif
Even more annoying was my g/f's hair was more or less fine!

She said the trick she found was to put hairspray on each section before she blew out the hair or used her curling iron.

The moring of the wedding, in desperation, I went to the hotel's hair salon which was really nice and they only used Kerastase! Giant pump disenspers of their shampoos and conditioners. I asked for a rollarset but the rollars were too small so they blew out the hair which looked great but when I returned to my room. Yes you guessed it, within 2 hours: My bangs were like this again

I gave up and resigned myself to the fact that I was going to look like a 12 year old for the wedding

And the moral here? Don't go to Mexico with straight hair because it ain't happening.

What kind of hair spray does your friend use for her heat styles? My aunt bought the Superstar Ceramic Iron (ceramiciron.com) and the instructions say to use hair spray on each section. Neither one of us had ever heard of that before.

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

Hey sassygirl, she used a regualar old spray like Studio Fix or something like that. Nothing special. Another girl with us agreed with her about the hairspray thing first.

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

Yup, on my first trip to Jamaica a few years ago the same thing happened. Except I never made it to the in-laws. As soon as I stepped off the PLANE, my hair went frizzo. I think braid-out styles, wash n go, are better for trips to tropical climates.

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

I agree, BRH. When I went to Cancun, I had to throw on my baseball cap almost immediately!!!

Same thing in Jamaica. If you stay for a while though, I found that your hair gradually will adjust to the humidity and will start looking decent again.

This reminds me of the time some friends and i went to a party on a boat in Savannah, GA. I looked at my friend and thought to myself, "If she knew what her hair looked like, she wouldn't be grinning like that."

Then I caught a glimpse of my own frazzled strands out of the corner of my eye.

Within 1 hr every black female was sporting a bun or a ponytail. Except for the one girl with long, type 3 curls. She even had the nerve to ask if anyone was going swimming!!

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

I completely agree with you. Anytime you go somewhere with a lot of humidity, your hair will frizz. I used to go to Miami with my hair done, my hair would frizz instantly in the same day. I learned my lesson. Next time i go to miami, i will be all naturale!

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

I have the same question. Where in Mexico? I leave on Saturday for a vacation in Puerto Vallarta. I'm getting my hair braided on Friday. which should help, but I was thinking of leaving my bangs out.

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

LOL, that's funny. When I went to Cozumel, Mexico in October, I wore my hair in a twist-out so I didn't have problems with frizz.

I definitely wouldn't recommend that

. I think you should braid it all so that you won't have to worry about the bangs, cuz trust me, they WILL frizz!!

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

Thanks Lindy. Guess I'll just have to deal with my big forehead phobia.

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

OK, I was just looking in the mirror, pulling back my bangs, and making peace with my forehead. I can do this!

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

Girl, I know what ya talkin' bout...I was in Acapulco a couple of years ago (thinking I was all cute with my freshly relaxed hair). As soon as we got to the resort, I had to put that stuff in a bun! So much for my hair blowing in the ocean breeze.

I was in Acapulco. Next time I know to stick to the braid outs. I only insisted on the straight hair because of the wedding day but that was not going to be the plan

Thankfully though, when I'm in St. Lucia my hair is fine and I can wear it straight with no humidity problems. It really depends where you go but boy did I count myself fortunate in that respect when I got back to NY

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

exactly the opposite for me, i grew up in the caribbean and i never experienced frizzies, in florida, i never got the frizzies. but i get frizzies in philly and atl. so weird.

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

Thanks for the warning BrownRelaxedHair. I'll keep this in mind when I make my first trip to Mexico. I guess I should just wear a bun huh?

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

I grew up in the Caribbean too and not once got frizzies. When I went to california for December tho,my hair frizzed up big time.

Re: Don\'t visit Mexico if you don\'t want frizz....

Every year I go to Puerto Rico and I NEVER go without a weave! Good thing I already knew what could happen before I went to Jamaica, Haiti, Mexico and Grand Caymen...all with weaves. For short trips, wash n' go curly or alternative. I know your trip was only for a weekend too and sorry for your experience.
