the hardest time IS when ur getting to shoulder and just past, but once you get past....its so much more easier. i got fed up of having my hair cut to shoulder as my ends funked up after rubbing on my shoulders...so i decided to be adventurous and grow out my hair - bad ends and all. when i finally did, i had it trimmed and it was about 2 inches past shoulder, from then i'm now 1 inch past armpit and its much more pleasant. if u have a look on my fotki, u wil lsee that my April photo i have grown out my hair with bad ends, then had a trim...thats basically a visual of what i mentioned above...DONT GIVE UP! IF I CAN DO IT..ANYONE CAN!!!

Candy,

Thank You. I have just looked at your album WOW. I see what you mean about your ends, but what you went through was def worth it.
I have just self dusted yesterday,May have another dusting after my relaxer in 5 weeks.
so I really just want to keep growing with these ends get over this hump and then see what I am left with.

Kizzy we are on the same page. My ends look like yours. As I approach shoulder length they only get worse. 24/7 Protective styling only makes it worse because it creates U breakage in the back of my head. My hair grows and I know it but keeping it on my head is another thing entirely.

All I can tell you is to keep trying. Eventually one of these days I will find something that I can afford and that works.

OMG so its just gonna get worst

I am give my hair tell my next relaxer and see how it looks. If its getting worst I think I will cut and maintain a shorter style.

Hate to say this but we are not all supposed to have long hair

My site is old and is badly in need of updating. I don't have the time I need to devote to it.

I think that we can all have long hair, it is just that the methods that others use are just like the products they don't work for everyone. Also what we are willing to do to have long hair has a lot to do with it.

If I could just retain my growth I would be on easy street. But it keep breaking and splitting and I keep getting cuts and trims. I am just trying to maintain until January.

I don't know... I agree with Karezone and really believe its about how much effort you're willing to put into it. I've fallen down many a times but at least my hair's pretty healthy... That being said I do think alot of us have to put in considerably extra work and time to get there :look: .

I agree alot of the women on here seem to grow hair effortlessly. Compared to some of the lovely ladies my hair needs sorting out. But amongst some of my friends its still v very healthy.

Kizzy, try wet setting your hair. It will keep your hair off of your shoulders for a couple of more inches. Hopefully, you like the curly look.

I agree... when your hair starts touching your shoulders...it should be kept up and moisturized everyday so that there wouldn't be any friction between your hair and your top...this is the most vulnerable stage...try moisturizing and keeping up your hair until you've grown a few inches past shoulder length.

I don't get it though. After your hair is past shoulder-length, isn't your hair still touching your shoulders somehow? How is the "shoulder-length" stage different from say the "bra-strap length" stage?

Maybe I need to be more cautious myself since my hair is basically at the shoulder-length stage also. :ohwell: I keep my hair up most of the time anyway, but I could do better about oiling my ends and keeping them really moisturized. :yep:

This is so going on with me right now. The longest part of my hair is just between my shoulder blades and it was seeming kind of thin to me. I didn't remember any horrible shedding or breakage so I didn't know what to attribute the 'thinness' to other than I have a bunch of different lengths in my hair.

I was looking at a couple of pics from this past summer and my hair looked so full, even when flat ironed on a low setting, but now I know what it was. Here is the pic from the summer.

PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP!! That's exactly how my ponytail looked at that length a few months ago. I started to trim three inches but I'm glad I didn't because it's filling in. Remember your ends are the oldest part of the hair or the hair that was there when we really didn't know what we were doing .

Here's what helped me though.
1) warmed shea butter on the ends every time I deep condioned
2) Airdrying with hair braided instead of a bun (this made a big difference).
3)keeping my ponytail off of my clothes. Sometimes I'll grab a clip or bobby pin if I'm not using the baggy method.

I think we all go through stages with our hair. I know I am not feeling my hair right now. I have it in twists which I don't like as much. I realize that my hair needs to be protected. I hope the twists will help me get so more growth.

It seems you got some great suggestions here from the ladies. I use to wear my hair in wetsets.

Hey Kizzy,

Here's a tip--I'm in my lab most of the day, and when my hair is down, I'll drape a silk scarf over my shoulders to my hair only touches the silk and not my cotton shirts.
I do this also if my fabric is cotton and not smooth. I do it even with my hair past my shoulders since it gives me peace of mind.

Also Kizzy, I just want to say that before you know it, your hair will be past your shoulders. It actually happens quickly but this is the crucial time to get over the hump, as was mentioned. Babying your hair and ends will do that and keeping it in an updo at this point really does work.

For shoulder length hair, the ends of the hair are literally scraping across the shoulders and fabric like a broom, which breaks the hair off. That is the difference.

Once it's grown past that point, what rubs on the fabric is the length of the hair (if it's down) shaft. If it's rubbing on something rough, like wool, it can break too but it isn't as crucial with other fabrics like our hair ends. I'm still very much aware of my hair rubbing agains fabric if it's not smooth and use a scarf.

You definitely cannot give up now. It seems that you are doing everything right--condition wash, moisturize etc. So that certainly can't be the problem. Perhaps you should reduce the HARDCORE protein treatements and focus on moisture with light proteins (keraphix is good). My hair is the same length as yours and I am doing the bun challenge for all of 2006. Every 2 days or so, I like to add a bit of moisture to dry hair the ends only and set in rollers until the weekly wash.

I would definitely take the advice of wearing hair up from the women who made it past shoulder length. I look forward to seeing pics of your continued growth.

Yep. Definitely wear it up. Bunned, braided, clipped up, even straw set if you want to have a style.

I only wear my hair down about 20 days out of the year. Mostly because the back needs to catch up, but also to protect the rest of my hair which is just past my shoulders.

Also wearing it up might help you not focus so much on the length since it's hidden anyway.

Don't give up sweety. And thank you for bringing this up. A lot of us shoulder length ladies can relate to this and needed a word of advice ourselves. Just think, this is the end, the last stage of that "in-between" stage. I can't wait to get over it! I'm so over it, now.

 "I just can't give up now. I've come to far from where I started from. Nobody told me the road would be easy, and I don't believe He brought me this far to leave me."

I have been trying to find a way to express to you not to give up and this little refrain from a gospel song hit the nail right on the head. You didn't work this hard to just throw in the towel. I am sure at this point you have gotten some useful information, before you know it, you will be over this hurdle...
