Once you give your heart to the Father you are sealed with His Holy Spirit. Of course, there is also the baptism of the Holy Spirit, but this post is not about that. My point is that ALL believers have the Spirit of God inside of them and all believers have the ability to hear from God if we listen.
If someone prophesies over you, it should be confirmed. Though it may be confirmed by a third party who has no knowledge of the initial prophecy, ultimately God wants us to be so close to Him that he speaks to YOUR heart and then, when it is confirmed, it increases your confidence and draws you closer to the Father(see Example #3 below). Without that confirming word(through scripture, through our own heart and the counsel of others), it is very easy to be lead "to and fro" by whoever prophesies in your life.
Example #1 Dh and I dated all throughout college. After graduation, I moved back to my home town and DH stayed in the city where the college was and continued to attend the church we started attending after salvation.
An older lady in the church prophesied over DH that a young woman that she mentored was to be his wife. He had only been saved about a year and was very confused and alarmed by this prophecy because he wanted to marry me and had no interest or attraction in the other young lady.
He finally had to settle in his heart that what the woman had said was not true, because he had no confirming word and no peace.
Example #2- A few years ago we had some equipment to sell. A husband and wife contacted us about the equipment and then the wife took it upon herself to email DH. She said God told her that the equipment was for them and we should be obedient and "sow"(give it to them for free) it into their ministry.
DH and I had absolutely no stirring in our hearts that what she said was true, so that was the end of that. We ended up selling it to someone else who was instrumental in helping DH get a job with the company he worked for.
Example #3- I declared some things over my family a few months back. A few weeks ago, DH asked me to tell him my deepest desires for the next year. I gave him a list of things so we could believe God together and one of the things was something that I had declared "a few months back".
DH was talking to a friend yesterday and he prophesied over him concerning one of the most important things we're believing God for. The friend, of course, had no idea that this has really been burning in our hearts the last few months, but God did!
Sorry to write so much, but just wanted to encourage you all that God knows the deepest desires of your heart and no one should ever feel like just because they are prophesied over that it is "the word of the Lord".
Be blessed!
