Does your scalp need to breathe?

I wear my silk scarf a lot. I just got told, I'd go bald early. I didn't know whether to , or how to justify me wearing it. I doubt I'd go bald, but does your scalp need air or the sun?

My logic is, my NG blocks the air my scalp would get lol, particularly when I'm deep into a stretch. I don't tie my hair tightly either; but really, is scarfing for hours on end too much?

Well, when I had gills on my head, it sorta needed to breathe...

but I think I smothered them to death and they lost their function and morphed into ears so my head doesn't seem to need air that much. The way I wear baggies and headwraps, if my head needed air, it'd have turned blue by now. And if it needed sun, my ears would've lost their color like leaves and turned yellow (which is my undertone actually  ).

I know folks not used to it can feel smothered if their head were covered all the time and wish for a breeze to run through their hair, but methinks if heads needed to breathe, then kinky haired folks must be special coz our heads can handle this insulation

...day-in, day-out and not suffocate. :yay:

ETA Wait...You mean people get wind in their hair? What's that?!:afro:

No. Your head is not plastered with something airtight. In any case, there are plenty of blood vessels running through the scalp with oxygen flowing through them giving your scalp what it needs. Unless what you have on your head cuts the circulation, you'll be fine.

I think you would know if you needed the give the head wrap a rest. Your scalp will let you know. I personally have issues having my head enclosed for long periods of time. And if I wear a style where the hair is piled up at my crown, my scalp dries out and is painful. Baggying for more than an hour causes me issues. So my crown is sensitive.

There probably have been people who have had issues in the past and as usual it was generalized that everyone would have this problem. If your crown or scalp are not sensitive then I wouldn't worry about it.

Nonie, LOL from the first sentence seriously !
My new growth covering my scalp during stretches was the first thought that came to my head. I just didn't know /want to really explain that though, cos if the other person's not really receptive to hearing it, then you know.. Anyway, I'm home, and the scarf is still on my head .

Aviah, thank you. I never even thought about internal circulation, but more the reason for me to scarf away. I definitely don't make it airtight.

Nonie, I literally cried after I pasted the post with the multiquotes into Word . I haven't laughed that HARD in a while.

LOL at the first image . You made my day!

faithVA, sorry, I missed this before multiquoting. Thankfully, I don't have scalp issues except maybe buildup.

I have a question: since the scalp is skin and it has been shown that when all covered (say in paint) you can block your pores and die how is your scalp supposedly exempt from "breathing"?

Shoot, my scalp needs to breathe. I like clear scalp pores and fresh air circulating aerodynamically over my scalp. for real

sweetlaughter My definition of breathing is taking oxygen in and giving out carbon dioxide. I keep my body covered in clothes, and in fact smothered in the winter, and I don't find myself void of oxygen nor does my skin appear to suffocate.

The statement that "the scalp or skin needs to breathe" is an oxymoron. Now if we're talking about whether people are comfortable being covered, that's a-whole-nother ball game. There's such a thing as what folks are accustomed to. So if someone is used to having wind blow through their hair, then they might consider it smothering to keep a scarf on all day.

So if heads needed to breathe, the thousands of people around the world who keep their heads covered at all times would be suffering all kinds of problems. And if it's a question of whether hair can grow, we already know people who wig it to grow their hair and later post great results, so their heads clearly didn't suffocate. Then there are Sikhs who keep their head covered all the time and they happen to have very long hair.

So it's not a matter of breathing.

That is a myth. As long as you can breath from your mouth or nose you will not die. Blocking your pores prevents you from sweating and if you do that long enough under the right conditions you would overheat and die from that.

I don't think the bags, night caps, or wigs we wear are air tight anyway :nono:

It's like wearing a wig, wear it in moderation and allow the air to reach your scalp which your hair does allow. Problems occur when no oxygen reaches your hair or scalp because of a tightly bound head or tight wig. This restricts your scalp causing thinning edges and hair loss.
