I am starting to notice that the first week after my hair is relaxed its sooooo DRY! I have been moisturzing like crazy and shortly after my ends are tired looking and VERY dry!:nono: Is this normal? Des anyone else notice this with your hair?

Did you use a lye or no lye. I currently use no-lye and I am going to switch over to lye because I too have this problem if I forget to chelate. I use ORS Creamy Aloe which is a chelator. It does wonders to remove the build up from the no-lye.

ETA: you should probably try a chelator even if you aren't using no lye. I have heard so many rave about how it helps.

What is chelate? It doesnt matter if its lye or no lye-I always get the same results:wallbash:

A chelating agent can chemically bind with minerals and keep them from depositing on your hair . Chelating Shampoos removes calcium and mineral deposits from the hair. If you use a no lye relaxer or have hard water you will need to use this. It is different from a clarifying shampoo since clarifying only removes product build up.

ETA:
Once you remove the mineral buildup your hair will be free to drink up the moisture it needs.

Joico K-Pak Chelating Shampoo
ORS creamy aloe

are good

chelate-a shampoo used to get rid of mineral buildup (like calcium from like hard water and no-lye relaxers)
the 3 shampoos i know of (don't know the exact name so stick w/ me)
ORS aloe/olive, nexxus(?) aloe rid, mizani balance hair bath(matches the mizani butter blend relaxer.

this thread reminded me, it's time for me to chelate!

Do you only apply the relaxer to the new growth, when I would relax improperly (relaxer all the way through) I got that dryness, But not now. You can cover your already relaxed hair in conditioner during your relaxing process.

Wow, I've never had that problem. In fact, it was always just the opposite. My hair would be all glossy, shiny, and soft after a relaxer for about 2 weeks. Then it would start to dry out. Are you neutralizing enough? Do you also use a reconstructor during the process?

I actually covered the ends with chi silk and dc'd afterwards for 15 minutes. It was actually a lye texturizer. (first time using this) What can I do to combat the dryness?

You just need to generally up your moisture. Relaxing essentially is very drying for the hair. Maybe try an overnight DC or baggying.

I used to notice this when I used box relaxers. Now I use Mizani (lye) and I feel the opposite, my hair feel very moisturized and soft. From going to no-lye to lye that one of the things I notice. Now my scalp, oooohhhhhh weewee, be itching like crazy after I get a relaxer, but it returns to normal after my first wash.

Make sure that your moisture level is up before you do a touch up because a relaxer will only make any issues you already have worse.

If you are going to texturize than I would recommend only using one with lye (if it is in a box than it is no-lye) or use a regular lye relaxer and mix either with conditioner/oil.

Are you doing a post-rinsing pre-neutralizing protein step? I know that this step makes my hair feel extra yummy even though it usually hates commercial protein products.

I never had a problem with no lye relaxers giving me dry hair. ORS mayo makes my hair so moisturized and silky soft. I also add honey, molasses, and cinnamon to the conditioner. My hair just drinks it up!:lachen: :yep:

I agree that maybe the type or brand has a lot to do with it too. My results are always the same, super shiny, moisturized, and strong. I use Silk Elements Mega Silk relaxer, but I recently switched over to the Silk Elements Olive Oil relaxer. All I can say is YUM.

Also I coat my ends (from right before the NG to the ends) with conditioner - and if I'm lazy then I use regular ole' base, but a little goes a long way with the base. Maybe that has a lot to do with it as well. Perhaps the chi si, isn't enough of a protective coating during the rinse out, and you need something a little thicker/better.

After I'm done rinsing, I neutralize of course, but then follow it with Porosity Control. I do this before I DC. With every relaxer, I do a protein treatment (usually Aphogee hard core), and then a DC with a SUPER moisturizing conditioner (either one of the Silk Elements deep conditioning masks or Moroccan Oil Intense Conditioning Mask -- which is my FAVORITE dc).

After all that's said and done, I apply my leave-in's and style. Your hair care in between is crucial as well, and as someone mentioned you should probably step up your moisture anyways.

Another excellent chelating (also clarifying) shampoo is Kenra Clarifying. Learned about it here at LCF and found it in Beauty Express (Trade Secret). It really doesn't seem 'stripping' ironically.

Same here. :lick:
