DOES NEWGROWTH = SHORTER HAIR??

i just washed my hair last night. it went great, but i looked in the mirror today and my hair looks shorter. i know its not laying flat so that may be why. my newgrowth is about 3/4 inches long now and my last touch up was like the 26th of August. *sighs* hair......

lol
i bet that would make sense. my NG is tugging my relaxed ends into somewhere. literally the only way i would know if it grew is by straightening. otherwise its just this gigantic (but shrinking nonetheless) ball on my head.

don't worry, it's really just the new growth. as you stretch longer your ends start to look thinner too. sistaslick has a nice scientific explanation for this. too bad i can't recall it at the moment, LOL. but seriously, your hair isn't shorter, it just looks that way. :)

yeah? i'm so happy you brought that up cuz my ends are looking skinny and gross. i thought it was time for another dust. omg. it's only been a month and im beginning to feel gross. it's getting harder to style. *sighs* i pray that i make it. i'm going for 9 and half weeks so i can progressively be able to stretch 12 weeks regularly.

It really looks gross at four months post. Looks great after touch up though! Stay away from the scissors...

New growth sure does mean shorter hair for some. I relaxed my sister's hair in March and it was way past her shoulders. Now she has almost 3 inches of unstretched new growth and her hair is barely touching her shoulders.

Oh yeah...my hair shrinks big time. I'm currently on my first 12-week stretch and I could swear I've lost 3 inches.:perplexed

I used to think the same thing before I became a member of LHCF and now I know better .. When I am 8wks or more post my roots began to turn into dreds and the shrinkage begins... I just keep my hair moisturized and bunned and keep it moving.... Don't worry once you get a touch-up your hair will be back to normal again....

believe me i get shrinkage all the time! And we got the relaxer around the same time and I only have like 3/4 inch of newgrowth :(. I feel like my hair is not growing as fast as it used to.....

I am so glad that you started this thread, I thought I was loosing my mind, just last night I was looking at my hair and I thought it is significantly shorter than when I relaxed. Especially at the back, it feels horrible. One of the ladies i work with was asking How come my hair looks longer sometimes and shorter at other times. i didn't know what to say to her coz I wondered the same thing.
God bless the LHCF ladies. Y'all are wonderful.

This happens to me all the time. The NG makes the hair look shorter and ends look thin. Don't clip until u straighten it out so u can trim the right amount off.

Don't trim your hair unless you got a fresh relaxer:nono:,since newgrowth in most cases grows uneven you would automatically cut your hair uneven.

And yes hun,it is shrinkage,I was on my first 25 weeks stretch and I went from 3-4 inches past my shoulders to neck length.

I knew shrinkage does this, but I was seriously freaking out at today's wash. "DID MY HAIR BREAK?! I thought I was close to my goal. Why am I barely looking shoulder length!" But it's all shrinkage
At least that's what I keep telling myself! :lachen: I'll wait until the next touch up (I haven't had one since Sept 1st) to see.

Bumping again because i have been stretching for 5 months and my hair looks like it has not grown if anything it looks shorter to me. Even when i straigthen my hair it doesnt look any longer.Does hair actually get shorter from stretching because if it does this has set me back progress wise:sad: Question for all the stretch ladies.

It's just the shrinkage. At five months post you should have some nice ng (2 and a half maybe more inches). When you get your touch up, as long as you've been moisturizing, sealing and generally taking care of those ends, your hair will be longer...guaranteed.

Dang! What a great thread! My ends look horrible after a few weeks and I was thinking, I am gonna have to get another inch cut off?!?!? :wallbash:

As far as looking shorter, I just get a piece of the longest layer and stretch it out; then I can see it's the same length and then I can calculate another inch or so in for the ng.

Thanks to those who have responded. I was about to have a fit. Because i felt like i have been getting no where. So i am crossing my fingers
