Does hair growth slow down in the winter? I thought that was a myth. But my hair has seemed to almost stop growing this past month or so.

I've checked for split ends or damage. None that I can see. I color my hair so I can tell by my new growth my hair hasn't grown really in the past 6 weeks. It was doing really good this summer. I was atleast 1/4 inch a month. Perhaps a dormant stage? How long does that last? Anybody?

My hair growth has slowed down too. My mom always told me that hair grows faster in warmer weather. I'm sorry I wish I had an definite answer for you.

It depends on the person - so if you think your hair is slowing down, growth wise, it most likely is.

Hi JustKiya

I think it depends on the person as well. For me, I really notice no difference based on the seasons wrt growth. Dryness, yup (winter)...growth, nope.

it's individual just like all hair growth is. some report their fastest growth in the winter.

I was waiting for my growth spurt this summer.. but it never really happened:( lol

My hair grew but just not as much as in winter I think

I found this (cut and paste) and it doesn't say anything about seasons... Maybe I'm in the telogen phase.

The Hair Growth Cycle

Hair follicles grow in repeated cycles. One cycle can be broken down into three phases.
  1. Anagen - Growth Phase
  2. Catagen - Transitional phase
  3. Telogen - Resting Phase
Each hair passes through the phases independent of the neighboring hairs.
Anagen Phase - Growth Phase

Approximately 85% of all hairs are in the growing phase at any one time. The Anagen phase or growth phase can vary from two to six years. Hair grows approximately 10cm per year and any individual hair is unlikely to grow more than one meter long.
Catagen Phase - transitional phase

At the end of the Anagen phase the hairs enters into a Catagen phase which lasts about one or two weeks, during the Catagen phase the hair follicle shrinks to about 1/6 of the normal length. The lower part is destroyed and the dermal papilla breaks away to rest below.
Telogen Phase - resting phase

The resting phase follows the catagen phase and normally lasts about 5-6 weeks. During this time the hair does not grow but stays attached to the follicle while the dermal papilla stays in a resting phase below.
At the end of the Telogen phase the hair follicle re-enters the Anagen phase. The dermal papilla and the base of the follicle join together again and a new hair begins to form. If the old hair has not already been shed the new hair pushes the old one out and the growth cycle starts all over again.

Hmmm I am going to keep my eye out on this. But try to bump up some warmth on your body with cardio. Keep exercising to boost metabolism and oxygen to the scalp. My growth is moving along fine with this.:yep:

For me this is true I get super human hair growth in the summer and then it puts on the breaks around October, and my hair seems to be shedding more !

I usually go thru a little spurt, then it will slow on down till the spring....then it's back on

I tried to star a thread about this a couple of months ago. My hair definitely grows faster in the winter. I see almost zero growth in the summer. I think everyone just has different cycles of growth. I guess I'm just a winter cycle, because I don't think I do anything different (except more protective styles) that would lead to more growth.

The reason I know I am not confusing growth and retention is because I have worn braids in the summer and the winter (and taken photographs...and my hair was braided by the same woman) and my hair growth in the winter was definitely a bit more...like between a .25 and .50 difference (depending on the section of my hair) a month.

I am one of these people. At first I though I got a growth spurt in the summer, but I think I just noticed growth more the summer after my BC. But I definitely grow and retain more length in the winter.

Hey Bella  you got so many diff answers, so what about you? You live in a warm environment, so how does that play apart in things for you?

I always heard that your grows faster in the warm summer months, but I never noticed in difference in my hair growth.

I am a fall/winter grower, so I have to be real nice to my hair, this is growing season. LOL, during the summer I am a little disappointed I didn't see a big growth!

For the majority of people their hair grows faster in the summer than in the winter.

I think the theory behind this is that since MOST people live in seasonal climates they tend to be more active in the summer and less active in the winter.

Kind of like how a good number of members on here have noticed that they have greater growth when they workout vs. being sedentary. I think increased circulation from working out and being more active contribute to increased hair growth. I think the same thing applies especially to people who have traditionally cold winters.

:lachen::lachen::lachen: When I started reading this thread first thing that popped in my head was PHOTOSYNTHESIS and my biology class:lachen::lachen:

This thread is very helpful that is for sure. I didn't think hair grew in the winter at the average rate it would as like the warmer season's, thats y I braids my hurrr:grin::grin:

I wonder what MT (mega tek) has to say about this?:lachen::lachen:
Well since I am using, I will be the first to answer that question:lachen::lachen:

i thought my hair grew faster in the summer. now when i think about it, my hair grows constant all year long. i think i just notice my grow in the summer and now winter...as of last winter.

eta: i was born and raised in heat so when i live in cool/moist regions, my hair loves it and so do i.
