Does anyone's hair seem to do better with heat?

I'm doing a mini-experiment on my hair. Last week I washed, blow dried with one of those ionic-tourmaline dryers (which I absolutely love!), and flat ironed. My hair was smooth and silky and I had virtually no breakage the entire week. The only hair I lost was from normal daily shedding.

This weekend I decide to rollerset and my ends didn't come out smooth. I can feel my comb catching on hairs. :nono: And although it's not a huge amount of breakage... it's still there and it looks like more than when I used heat. When I decide to wear my hair straight I've been trying not to use heat, but it just seems like I have a better outcome (looks-wise and breakage-wise) after flat ironing my hair smooth.

Does anyone else's hair seem to have less breakage with heat? I've been trying to figure this one out... Why do you think that's the case?

My hair does great with in-direct heat. I rollerset so this helps keep my ends smooth. For my hair AIRDRY= :afropick: :nono:

I might need to work on my rollerset technique, especially since I'm texlaxed. I tried it last night and it was not cute. My ends weren't smooth so they would tangle up on each other.

my hair loves heat!!!!! It does well when I air dry but it just looks so much better when I use the heat (flat iron) I normally air dry then flat iron because I hate hooded dryers and my hair is still to short to do rollersets and look good

I was asking myself the same question. I tried to let my hair airdry and then I flat ironed. My hair turned out so frizzy. I think that my hair responds better with heat. I am disappointed bc I cannot seem to do anything to make my hair look decent these days.

I feel you! My hair tangles and breaks like crazy when I don't flatiron it. If I airdry, I have to wear it in a twist and keep the combing at a bare minimum becuase of the tangles and breakage. I usually airdry and flatiron. Then I use Carusos during the week if I need to give it a little lift or body.

Which blowdryer do you have? I am looking to purchase a new one soon.

I bought the Ion Conditioning Ionic-Tourmaline blow dryer. I wanted to try out one of those with the new-fangled technology. It really did seem to seal in moisture to my strands. My hair was crazy shiny and silky after flat ironing. I don't think my hair has looked that good in years. And I saw not one bit of breakage.

This is part of the reason I post the question. Not only does my hair look better, but I think it feels better, with less breakage with heat. If I rollerset or do anything else with my hair, I have to keep a comb out of it or else I see unnecessary breakage.

ITA!! Although I like my airdried 'fro:afropick: lol! My hair just feels so much healthier and fleixble w/ rollersetting and deep conditioning under my dryer.

Girl, once I saw how my hair looked WITH heat, I was tempted to use it again. Even though I've been trying to stay away from heat. Surely once per week can't hurt, right? :look:

I'm thinking about adopting the regimen as well. I cannot comb airdried hair. And if my rollerset doesn't come out right (which it hasn't been lately:rolleyes:), I can't comb it either.

Sorry to hear about your breakage problem, Sunshine.

Heat actually restored my hair after my stupid beautician overprocessed me for years and my hair was fried.

I quite honestly don't know why my hair did break off mid-shaft, but it was dry and red and angry.

I started using heat and oil on it and it seemed to "heal" itself.

Heat is not bad for hair, but it's all in the technique.

Now for your comb, what type of comb do you use? If you're using plastic combs, that could be your problem.

Lots of longhaired lovelies use bone combs, only.

Good luck with the heat.

I only comb my airdried hair enough to pin it up or flatiron...otherwise, it's pure drama. Rollersets don't work for me, either. Even if I Caruso it too curly, the ends break off when I comb through it. I don't know what it is, but my hair just likes to be slightly bumped at the ends. It was trial and error for me to find that out, but now that I know, airdrying and flatironing weekly is my regimen. (And it must be working...the lady who usually sits behind me at church complimented me on my hair today!)

Interesting indeed. I do have a plastic comb. Maybe I should upgrade to bone combs.

I must say that my hair is much more stronger and manageble when I incorporate "some" heat to my regimen. I was doing it too much at first (was using the blow dryer and flat iron imporperly) and have since learned that my hair is ok with using mid heat ranges no more than 1 x a month. However, i have learned to air dry this summer and can deal with rocking a fro too! I can't do anything but put my hair back in a banana clip when air dried though. Even with oils & leave in, its rebellious. Weird too that I get "some" breakage when I try to air dry, i don't get any when I blow dry (less frequently).

My hair breaks less with heat also, especially around relaxer time. I can air dry and flat iron with minimal problem once a week if I have to. I use thermal protectants to combat heat damage.

I love heat, but my hair doesn't. I think that's why my hair had started thinning. I was using heat waaaay too much. After a while, overusing heat will definitely catch up with you. Now whenever I flat iron my hair, which isn't often, I let my hair airdry first and then flatiron it. It turns out really great and looks healthy. It doesn't really get frizzy.

MY hair is funny and does not like to be airdry all the time, especially when I am co washing and I use the blowdryer once or twice a week on with no problems.
I use the blowdrying on a low heat setting when using my BBD Stretch creme which works better with heat.
