Does Anyone Visit a Dominican Salon Regularly?

Or have you in the past? How did (or was) that working out for your hair growth/retention? I hear extreme results, some peoples hair flourished and grew like never before, others broke off and thinned out. I've had 2 visits to a Dominican salon about 6 weeks apart, and loved the results both times, plus you can't beat $25 for a wash, dc and roller flip-out..Oh how I love the flip out! My hair seems to be doing great so far, silky, looks longer probably cause it has gotten longer, thick yet feathery..I'm used to my hair feeling heavier which to me feels healthier but that bounce and shine is something fierce...still I have doubts about the health of it.

I wouldn't mind going once a month, I just don't want to destroy progress.

If you do go and will continue, how often do you go? what do you get done?

TIA

I go to a Dominican shop about once a month. I usually just get my roots blown out. My hair has grown since going there and the price and service (no waiting) is great. Plus I only use Dominican products in my hair anyway.

I go on the regular, every week. Although for the past month and a half, I've been doing at home deep co's and roller sets. This time, I think I found the right salon. I don't have to argue with them over special requests and she carries all of the "good" products.

Hell I can't even find one here in Houston, Texas!! If they had a good one, I'd love to check it out and see what they do first-hand. I've heard they do a mean blow-out!

Do any of you just get a rollerset at the Dominican salon without a blowout? Will they wrap it for you after the rollerset so that you can have a straight look?

That's great for the ones that go regularly. I like the idea of once a month, longer if that. I've found a great one that does touch-ups really really good so I'd love to definately keep going. Can't beat their prices either..these black owned salons better wisen up.

That's what I used to get when I went. I rarely had them blow the length of my hair out. My hair dried straight on the rollers. But I noticed some people's hair didn't. Like when they took the rollers out there were spots that weren't straight.

Thanks Bmore! There are a couple of new ones that just opened up by my house. Maybe I'll check them out next week.

I've done this before. i have been to Lily's in Norcross, GA a few times. I just moved to Atlanta so i'm not too familiar with the area but isn't Lawrenceville north of the city? So it shouldn't be too far.

Since it seems like everybody wants the blow out, they may ask you a couple of times to make sure thats what you said. "no blow??" last time i went, however, i saw a sign up that said that they are charging an extra $3 now if you want your hair wrapped or pin curled before you leave.

Last wk, (i was 8 wks post) i got just my roots blown and pin curls, but i didn't get the extra $3 charge though. i think she felt bad bc there was some sort of mix up and i ended up waiting longer than i should have.

I've been going biweekly for the last 2 years or so. I NEVER allow them to come near my hair with that blow dryer. I would say that my hair has flourished.

Norcross isn't far from Lawrenceville. On a weekend it'll probably take me about 15-20 minutes to get to Lily's. I've heard that Lily's always packed which is why I've never been. I went to one two years ago down the street from Lily's called Different Salon. They're in that Rainbow shopping center where the old Kmart used to be off Jimmy Carter and Rockbridge Road. I've also been to Karisma which is off Indian Trail.

Hi Svelte! I always have to do double takes at your avatar...looks like me from behind :spinning:.

I've been going to a Dominican salon every week since March, and I've made great progress. I get a light roots-only blowout.

I go (or at least I try to go) every 2 weeks. Going there regularly prevents me from using the dreaded flat-iron. I love how my hair feels when I leave the salon...weightless! :yep:

Up until maybe 2 months ago I went consistently for 2 years and before that off and on. I stopped only because I can now acheive the same results at home. I will still go off and on in a few weeks because my arms get tired rolling my hair and I like the atmosphere of my old salon.
My hair was in good condition during the time I went. I only had them blow out the roots. Finding a salon that will not rip through your hair as they are combing it out is very important. If necessary bring your own products.

Hi, is that you in your avatar? I had to do a double take cause that kinda looks like me from the front! :spinning: Who's yo daddy?!..I kid

That's awesome, every week since March. I get lazy, so I'd love love love to go every two weeks for so cheap and come out with great hair, I may tell them to only do roots too and lay off the blow-outs, all that heat makes me cringe being that I rarely put it to my own head.

I didn't know Different was a dom. salon. I go to Angie's BSS to get my combs, rollers, etc. and see the sign...hmm. How was it?

I'd like to know your impression of Karisma too. Been recently? The lady seemed nice on the phone when I called to asked a/b prices.

All Dominican Salons are not equal in care and service just like any other hair salon. Sometimes ppl have the misconception, because it's a Dominican Salon, your hair will grew. I've been to plenty/seen plenty of Dominican salons that use the cheapest of products, wash improperly, those who do not want to deep condition you and when they do, put you under the dryer for all but about 5 minutes. Have been very aggressive when combing through hair for roller sets, overlap relaxers, use regular shampoo rather than neutralizer, etc etc etc. The list can go on and on. And sometimes, the major factor is the communication issue.

However, I have been to dominican salons, if the stylist notices an issue with your hair, she'll go in the back, concot up some formula, deep condition you properly, make suggestions, offer advice and etc.

PPL who go to dominican salons who experience the thinning and damage is usually because they are overlapping the relaxer, relaxing too straight and blowdrying each week.

Yep, that's me! And sombody's daddy got some explaining to do!:lachen::lachen:
Me = Lazy...YES! Dominican salons in DC = Cheap...NO! :lachen:. But I can't beat them being open 7 days a week, and getting me out of there in an hour and half :look:. Yep, roots-only blowouts rock! I just wrap mine afterwards to get that fully blown-out sleek look.

I go to Maxx's on Jimmy Carter EVERY Thursday after work. I sed to go to them every Thursday when I was in NYC also.

What's the salon's name and where is it?

I go to dominican salon's every week. I am six weeks since my last perm and it looks like I just got a perm about a week ago. Some of the hair stylists are kinda rough with my hair so I usually just wait till I can get one thats not as fast and harsh on hair. Like I think since they are doing the exact same style everyday (putting rollersets in and taking them out) they are usually just trying to do as many heads as possible. But besides that I do like going to them. Here in jersey I can get a wash and blow out for just $15 or just a wash and set for $10. I bring my own products because I do think they are kinda stingy with their stuff. I bring my own shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner and heat protector.

I really dont know why black stylists dont get with the program and start up their own shops like this with the same pricing? This is a pretty easy set up and they could make a LOT of money.

I sooo wish I could I find a Dominican Salon here....I am in KY. I would go across the bridge to Indiana if necessary:laugh: . I just want to go one time!

I may have to wait until I visit my sister in law in ATL....sounds like there are a lot of them there.

I really want to go see Judy in D.C., but I'm 16 weeks post relaxer and I don't want to be talked into a relaxer. Do you think the Dominicans will work on me with that much NG??

What products do you take to them?

What products do you take to them?
Tressame shampoo and conditioner
ALTER EGO Nourishing Impac Ego Treatment with Garlic- deep conditioner
Salerm 21 and the energy hair regenerator vial.

sometimes i switch it up but for the most part this is what i bring. A friend of mine also brings her own olive oil spray sheen lol.

She won't talk you into one. I used to go to her regularly and she never mentioned me getting a relaxer. I would go early or at a time when it's not too busy so the person rollersetting your hair can take her time dealing with the NG.
