Does Anyone Still Use Amla Oil?

I used to but stopped when I read somewhere that it had mineral oil in it.

1. Which kind do you use?
2. How do you use it?

And has anyone tried Amla powder?

I use Dabur Amla Hair Oil as a pre-poo - slather it on and leave overnight or a few hours in the day.

I tried the powder, but did not notice my hair being any nicer during or after the treatment. It just makes a mess.

How funny you bring this up, my Indian friend recommended this product to me just over the weekend and we went to an Indian store to pick it up. I haven't tried it either and was turned off by mineral oil being listed as the first ingredient. I'm going to try it as a pre-poo one of these days. My Indian friend swears by it.

I use it. Love it. I use it as a hot oil treatment before I shampoo and it never fails..my hair always turns out softer.

I Like the Dabur Amla oil, though my BF doesn't, so I use it when he's away or only overnight for a prepoo treatment. I'd use it more often if he wouldn't balk at the scent. :ohwell: So, instead for daily maintenance, I use Dabur Vatika Oil.

I've also taken to using Amla Powder w/Neutral Henna and Shikakai powers. I've noticed (as has my mom), a large reduction in hair breakage/shedding.

They are weekly treatments in my regimen now.

I used the 2 samples that I got a while ago. I just recently bought a bottle so I will be adding this to my routine.

That pic in my siggy I think I had some amla and vatika oils in there. It definitely felt smoother.

I've used qhemet biologics Amla Oil and its really good. It has no mineral oil in it. THe only thing that sucks is its kinda pricey. You can go to ww.qhemetbiologics.com to see more about it.

I use Amla oil. I may apply daily for a few days before I wash (CW). Sometimes I apply it the night before and CW the next day. I have used Dabur, but I have Ayur now. I also use Vatika. You can mix the Amla, lemon juice and coconut oil if you dont' have Vatika.

I'm so glad that you started this thread! I was trying to do a search, but some of the info that I know that I read in the past year, or so, did not appear. :( I used Dabur Amla Hair Oil and it did make my hair stronger and darker, which I love. I ran out of it awhile, ago and didn't buy anymore. I would like to make my own, but don't know exactly how.

I just got some Shikakai and Amla powders. IDK how to use them. How do you use yours? TIA! :)

I use qhemets amla oil pomade too. I like the fact that it doesn't contain mineral oil and isn't diluted with a bunch of other oils.

I recently purchased the Dabur Amla and Vatika oil. I'm on the fence with the Vatika but I loveeeeeeeeeee the Amla. The smell is quite strong but I like it and use it about 2x a week, once prior to styling my hair (I normally keep it in twists) and then the night before I shampoo as a pre-oil treatment.

Oh great ladies! Thanks for all the responses! Karamel11, I may give the quemet amla a try. Do you use it as a prepoo? Does it smell as strong as Daburs? And did it darken your hair?

I have a bit of an outline in my hair Journal under the Henna Journal but basically, I take herbs (Nettle, Horsetail, Catnip and Alfalfa Leaf), boil them COVERED for about 10-15 minutes. I use the water from the herbs to mix my powders instead of regular water. I make the paste consistency between moderately thick to semi runny and apply to hair (Usually dry). The consistency is up to you. I've found applying with a color applicator brush works if the consistency is just right. Also, I wear gloves because the powders can and will stain your hands/fingernails. :barf:

I leave this in my hair for a minimum of 1 hour, usually uncovered unless my BF is home, then I'll cover with a baggie. I rinse out and follow with Silicon Mix or DDTA just to get some slip back to the hair.

You can also use the powders as a type of rinse for the hair but I haven't used it too much this way. Using it as a paste though, I've had very satisfactory results. As a matter of fact, tonight is henna night after I get home from the gym. :yay:

NOTE: Using the powders can make the hair dry, it's best to do a prepoo treatment with some oil(s).

Thank you so much, VWVixxen!

I took a look at your hair journal and album and your hair looks so beautiful! :rosebud: After getting a relaxer and using your Indian powders, it looked as though you had freshly trimmed your hair, which, looks so soft and shiny. I wanted to reach right through the monitor and touch it. :yep: I've heard that you can't use henna on hair that is relaxed or has any chemicals on them, but you did and your hair looks great!

A couple of months ago, I bought some of the powders that you mentioned in your journal. I've been going crazy looking for them the last couple of weeks. After reading this thread last night, I was on a mission to find them and I did! :D Someone (definitely not me) had put them way back in a closet. I thought that they had been mistakenly thrown away, so I bought only a couple of different powders this week. So, now I have the following powders.

  1. Amla
  2. Aritha
  3. Henna
  4. Neem
  5. Shikakai
I'm going to use some of these, today. Is it okay to put it on my hair before I wash it, or would it work better to shampoo first and then, apply the powder (paste) mixture? Do you think that it would be okay to leave it on while I workout? Sorry for all of the questions. TIA! ;)

I don't mind the questions at all! As much absorbing as I do of information from others, it's very nice to be able to contribute back! :yep:

I read that too about not putting henna on relaxed or color treated hair. Well, this was AFTER I used it! I used a Bigen color (Brown Black) and then used the henna about two weeks later. Rumor has it that it can't be done. My hair says it can! And I love the way it has made my ends seemingly disappear! They still need a trim but it's not so friggin obvious now!:clap::clap:

Let me give you some suggestions: First, if you don't want your hair turning reddish, check that HENNA very carefully and make sure it's not the reddish one. Otherwise, it WILL COLORE YOUR HAIR. No ifs, ands or butts about it. If your hair is dark, it will add a reddish highlight, subtle but still there, if it's light colored! If you don't want color, make sure you have NEUTRAL henna. Or do a test sectionof hair before you do the whole head. Don't let the actual color of the powders deceive you! They lie! It looks green but watchout!!

The Aritha and Neem powders are great, I have those too but the Aritha can leave your hair feeling a bit 'hard' afterwards. You'll definitely want to make sure you follow up with a good moisturizer/slip giver. I've been finishing up with an ACV rinse, not sure if this has been beneficial though...

Absolutely! You can shampoo your hair first. I don't think there are any hard fast rules for the order of application, just whatever works better for you. To me, the paste spreads better on wet hair. Just make sure you rinse, rinse, rinse!!

AND DON'T GET THE MIXTURE OR WATER FROM IT IN YOUR EYES OR MOUTH. :gurney: It's VERY bitter and will burn like nobody's business!

ETA: Thank you! Wow, my hair is a long way from beautiful yet (thinking of LaLa's hair) but I'm on a mission! It's getting there!

I was so anxious to use them and did, earlier. I'm thankful that my hair did NOT turn red. My henna is the Reshma brand and says 100% natural and can be used for body art or as a hair conditioner.

I used all of the powders that I mentioned previously, (twice as much Amla) mixed w/ about 16 oz. of hot water (too much). I used half of the mixture and put the rest in the fridge. I put several plastic caps on, worked out for 1 hr. and took care of some other things for another hour. I rinsed and used DDTA (deep conditioned w/o heat for an hour).

My hair felt super strong. The ends were a bit stiff, but that went away after I used S-Curl spray and some oil. My hair feels great! My SO asked if I had dyed my hair. I said, "Uh, oh! Is it turning red?" He said, "No! It looks black!" Yay! :yay: He said that my hair was shiny, as usual, which is good b/c I heard that henna is very drying and makes the hair look dull. I'm very pleased and will be doing this, again.

Thanks so much for all of your help! (((hug)))

1. Which kind do you use? I use Dabur Alma hair oil and Emami Alma Plus herbal hair oil. They both contain mineral and they have not done any harm to my hair.
2. How do you use it? I don't use it as a pre-poo as the directions suggest. I use it seal in the moisture, strengthen and also for shine after I wash my hair and apply leave in conditioner.

And has anyone tried Amla powder?
No I have not tried Alma powder.

I used Vadik ayurvedic amla oil and another(green label plastic bottle) brand a while ago... my hair was much softer but the smell got to me at times. I may revisit...

I used Dabur Amla oil last night for the first time, the smell is a little strong but I can deal w/anything if I can deal w/MTG, lol, I used it for my roller wrap and I must say it's a keeper:grin: , hair was soft and light, not heavy at all. I will be watching to see my results of growth and hopefully my hair will darken.
