Does anyone press their hair?

Just curious. Why do you press as oppose to perming? I am not interested in perming my hair and wondered what those who press their hair upkeep their hair?

when i was pressing it's beaceuse i needed was a little bit of water and i could have my afro. i like the versatility it provides. also i'm a bit of a rebel. and perms are very popular in my area. so if all the girls at my schools dyed their hair to match their shoes i would intentionally dye mine so it never match my shoes, just to make the masses mad

I press my hair in the wintertime. I, too like the versatility. Whenever something goes horribly wrong with my hair, I can just wash it and go and not really have to worry about starting all over again. Also, I have very fine hair and the strands of my hair look thicker natural even though I'm not sure exactly why. It has also always been easier to get my curly hair straight when it is natural than it has been to get my straight permed hair curly (or at least the kind of curly I want).

Thanks for answering. I had my hair pressed yesterday. I like the way it looks. I am natural and am in between styles before I get my weave and I thought the pressing would give me a nice change. I was pleased with it!

Hi MsTankers,

I press, especially in the wintertime. I press and flatiron, for an ultra-straight and long-lasting style. Usually I keep it in a bun. I wrap it at night or put it in pincurls, and it holds up really well.

Ok. I press because after having a perm since the 8th grade all the way through college and my hair NEVER being longer than the base of my neck, I got a clue. My last perm broke my hair off shorter than that and I had to WEAVE. Well I kept weaving for three years and now my hair is bra-strap.

Relaxers work well for most types of AA hair. I have seen the posts and pics on this site to prove it. But on MY bushy 4 a/b hair that breaks very easily and is dry the relaxer broke me off. I would like to relax, but I can't. I have started to work out and my hair gets bushy---so I put it up. that's it.

I press my hair as well. I will not be pressing it during the summer months, because it get's very hot and humid during this time of year. I will, however, press my hair come early fall. I love the versatility of my natural hair. I can wear it kinky, curly or straight. It's all good in my hair's neighborhood! LOL!!!

I press instead of perm because I want to stay natural. Pressing allows me to straighten my curls when I want the pretty "relax" look. My presses only last a week but I can actually PUSH it to two weeks, but it will not look as fresh. I only press once every three months (give or take).
