their hair seems to get shorter the more new growth they get?
I have been airdrying since May and I dont have any breakage but my hair looks progressively shorter the more new growth I get(I didnt think relaxed heads got shrinkage!!)
Then when I finally relax my hair it looks longer again. Can anyone relate to this?

I know what you are talking about. Instead of growing down, it grows out and up. The hair looks really thick but not long

This happens to me and my sister all the time. I think it's because of the shrinkage from the new growth. Natural hair has the tendancy to shrink when washed and air dried afterwards. Especially if it's type 4.

Yep

It seems that the new growth pushes the length of the hair outward rather than downward so mmmm hmmmm--it looks shorter .

Yes it's called shrinkage. My hair shrunk more in the back, than on the top. The relax hair won't shrink if it's relaxed bone straight, but you better believe the newgrowth shrinkage will. It's even more noticeable if you have 4a/b hair.

this happens to me all the time!! my newgrowth makes my hair appear shorter due to shrinkage. its kinda cool though, because when you actually relax your hair, it is so much longer.

Okay this happens to me, of course I don't have a relaxer but just wanted to say I can identify.

In fact I was tempted to blow dry my hair yesterday because I could feel the new growth with my fingers but my hair didn't look any longer.

It's a little frustrating because I know that in order for me to reach my first goal of shoulder length (unstretched) just feels like it's going to take forever.

But shoulder length for me unstretched, would be bra-strap stretched, I have THAT much shrinkage.

I actually like shrinkage for some styles, but it sucks when I'm trying to guess length

I'm glad that this info was posted. I was starting to get worried about why my hair has been looking shorter lately, especially since I've been oiling my ends on a daily basis. Now I know why.(I'm 9 1/2 weeks post relaxer.)

Ok, I'm the only one! My hair looks slightly longer, and I know it's supposed to look shorter.

When I get new growth I know it's REALLY growing because you can't see my center part anymore and I have to go buy bigger rollers.

*blinks eyes* I was JUST noticing this the other day. Man. I am appreciating how much thicker my hair looks since it is so, SO, fine, but it does look shorter. I've got some serious new growth/underprocessed hair going on here. I only pray I still have hair left by Christmas time...

I am appreciating my hair looking really thick and healthy even though it is underproccessed a bit and has new growth.

I was looking around in the caf today and a lot of the girls on campus have mid length damaged hair. I mean eat off edges, obvious breakage, dry and then they have the nerve to drown it in gel. I was starting to get horrified. My room mates hair is breaking off too. I just noticed it the other day. Her ponytail has gotten really thin and anorexic.

There is a girl in my class who's hair is screaming for attention. It is sooooo dry.And she wears it open every single day and I see tons of hair on her jacket collar.I know I sound mean but it is hard not to notice it when she is talking to me.

I know. The girls with the breakage and the non existent edges just make me want to cry. I guess that they either know that something is seriously wrong with their hair or they would rather have cute hair than have hair at all.

Well it has. In August her hair looked okay. It maybe needed a conditioner treatment but she let one of her friends do her relaxer and she combed it through to the ends and after she neutralized she did not put all of the conditioners and things on it and since then I have been steadily sweeping her hair up off of the floor.

Bump.
This is happening to me again.I'm 5 weeks post relaxer. My mom last saw me when I came home for Christmas with a fresh relaxer and was stunned by how much longer my hair was.Now when I came home this time with all my new growth shrinkage, she has been telling me to start washing once a month like I used to since she thinks my hair is shorter than it was for Xmas.It really isn't though;my last relaxer in March all the hairdressers in the salon I go to couldn't believe how much it grew.My mom has no idea what shrinkage is so she wouldn't understand if I tried to explain anyway.I will just have to wait for my next relaxer to see the growth.

just wash your hair whenever necessary. dont wait a month to wash it if its dirty. i think your hair is shorter only because of new growth shrinkage

Yeah.I wasn't planning to listen to her anyway.I am keeping up with my usual hair care regime. My mom knows very little about hair care.

i've always had shrinkage (natural & relaxed) & am used to it, but have always hated it. i am 5mths post relaxer at this point, so you can imagine the mini fro i have when i pick out my hair, and that's IF i can even get the pick thru it.
