Do you self relax?

I have self-relaxed for years. I have never trusted anyone with putting chemicals in my hair, that's also why I've never had my hair colored. My mom has also made me her personal stylist and she swears I have "growing hands"...so where's my bsl? Anyway,as long as I have my pre-relaxer treatment to prevent overlapping, I'm good. I part my hair in four sections and it's me and the ng.

From looking at your album, you're very close:yep:

I have never done my own relaxers but my hair is overprocessed and thinning. I ready to put in a lot of hard work into my hair and I can't keep going back to these stylist who overlap like it's nothing.:yep:Why oh WHY do they love to put the relaxer way past the new growth:wallbash:

So now I am thinking about self relaxing. But I am so scared that I'm going to overprocess, not rinse it out well, or be seriously underprocessed. I'm really terrified, it's gonna go wrong but I can't keep letting stylist overprocess my hair.

Yes I do. Problems when I paid someone good money to do it.

I've been reading a few threads lately and wondered

how many of you here self-relax, I do

how long you've been doing it Did it myself most of my life, went to a hairdresser for a 6 months that overprocessed and ALL my hair fell out. Now I do it myself again.

, what do you use as your favorite relaxer, Tried Designer Essentials for the first time in Sept. 07 and liked it - had problems w/ underprocesssing befor that.

and how well do you do it in the back to avoid overlaping. After joining this board, I used tips from the ladies and stretched for 4 months, based my scalp, separated my hair w/ clips into about 20 pieces in advance, the clip was positioned just below the new growth, protectant was on the previously relaxed hair, relaxer on the new growth, as soon as relaxer was on the new growth, clips came out, right side relaxed first and rinsed, then left side. I was able to apply it so fast using this method that I will probably cut a couple minutes off the processing time next time. No problems w/ overlapping or taking too long to apply. A couple pics of relaxer process in fotki.

I myself used to do it years ago. I've been natural now since 2002.

Thanks everyone :)

Im going to start again. years ago when i was younger with more time (pre-baby and LIFE) i used to do my own relaxers because i dint have any money. so since im back to being broke..lol...i think im going to attempt a texlax again. also the stylist i go to doesn't listen or pay attention. i told her before. front processes faster than back...so you need to start in the back. where does she start??? ill give you one guess....that's right...the front!! so i think if i do my own ill be able to achieve the texture i want. on top of that the front was already too straight, and what does she do smooth the relaxer back through it making it even straighter!!!!!!! she asked me when i came in did i want some of the curl taken out in the back and i told here NO it was perfect, dont you know she decided to smooth it through again anyways!!!! just whatever she wanted to do. plus she just ripped that tiny little comb through my NG, that was when i vowed I wasn't going back!! NOPE i worked too hard to grow that 2 in of NG to have her just carelessly rip it out with a teeny weeny little comb!:wallbash:

I self relax and I have been doing so since maybe the age of 15(I'm 21 now). I've been using Optimum forever because I heard that it was bad to switch relaxers. In order to avoid overlapping I use my fingers to apply so that I can feel where the new growth is.

What kind of clips do you use??
They were Annie slide in clips, that looked like the ones below, but they were plastic. I needed 2 packs I think. They came in 4 colors, and I separated quadrants by colors to help me remember where I had been.

I read someone's tutorial who had used rubber bands and I tried that in a practice run w/ cholesterol, but decided I did not want to be pulling a lot of rubber bands down the length of my hair in a rush.

Yup been doing it since 15. Nothing bad has happened. Fingers crossed :look: but since I'm 36 now I think I know what I'm doing.

Okay, I know this is an old thread but does anybody else have to check their blood pressure while self relaxing.

I thought that I was going to have a heart attack worrying about:
  • overlapping,
  • rinsing it out,
  • timing the protein,
  • timing the neutralizer,
  • did I grab the preneutralizer or the post neutralizer towel to dry my hair after the deep condition.
  • Does this dc have too much protein
  • Will I be completely bald in one week?
  • Oops, I forgot that I scratched an itch for .1 second two days ago on the left side behind my ear.
Aaaarghhh.

Came out beautiful by the way. :yep: Looking forward to next time.
