How do you self relax?

After a bad experience at the hair salon today I am convinced I need to try and self relax my own hair next time. Can anyone tell me how to self relax or direct me to any threads that discussed how to self relax your own hair? Also, where do beauticians get their relaxer systems from? I don't recall seeing relaxers such as design essentials or Affirm in my beauty supply. But do regular beauty supply stores usually carry these? Or do relaxers from the box work? I've never used one, so I'm curious.
