before trying out a new stylist, or do you just wait til your appointment time before discussing your hair and what you want done to it?

I used to schedule a wash and set and "interview" her while I was there.

If I got bad vibes from her I never went back.

I do, when it involves chemical treatments. It allows me to judge the stylist skill level and let's them get familiar with my hair type and condition.

Now I'm considering a chop, I'll do that. I saw a woman with a banging TWA at my job and got her stylist's name. I'll "interview" her first to see what she can do for me. Before, I just sat in the chair at the appointed time and learned the hard way...

I've found that visiting braiders/weavers beforehand can be a major benefit
because you have a chance to talk to them about prices, styles, and most
of all, SEE pictures of their work. If you come at the right time, hopefully another
customer is their so you can see her in action.

I think all stylists should have portfolios and should be able to show that
they have some skills before you commit to letting them do the work. If you are
going to relax my hair, I want to know how often you do relaxers and see pictures
of some clients you relaxed. Seeing is believing.

Yes! I will interview the stylist and if they "pass", I will schedule an appointment for a wash and set to see how he/she handles my hair. I just had a consultation with a new stylist today who told me she does NOT believe in basing the scalp because it "interferes with the relaxer"! How about you worrying about the relaxer not interfering with my hair follicles?!? Needless to say, I will not be using her services.

I have never done this before, but when/if I switch stylists again I will.

I had always been too afraid to speak up or ask questions, but not anymore.

When time to get my last relaxer (I used to do my own), I asked a friend whose hair is always nice about her stylist. I asked this particular friend because she is outspoken and would not go for someone jacking up her hair. When I called to schedule the appointment, I did ask a few questions. Everything went well as I thought it would.
