you get caught outside when it starts raining and duck for cover/reach for an umbrella and a white woman who you're hanging with accuse you of not wanting to get your hair wet? This has happened to me twice. Who wants to get wet? Isn't that what umbrellas are for? Hair is the last thing on my mind when it starts raining. Anyway, I'm natural so my hair gets BETTER with rain. I don't want to walk into a cold building after getting drenched when there's an umbrella in the car. Why do they think everything is about hair? And where the heck do they get the boldness to ask such a stupid question?:perplexed

It warms my heart that ignorance is still alive. I don't care if it's drizzling outside, but if it's pouring, trust that I'm not gonna be laughing and acting like I'm in a Gene Kelly movie. I'm gonna use my golf umbrella and feel happy that I won't look like a drenched rat.

.. well i never really cared about rain getting on my hair when i was relaxed or now that im natural. i love the rain ;)

(i dont think it was a stupid question, i think she just repeated something shes heard some other black person mention)

Agreed. If my hair is looking right and it rains, I'm rushing for cover or getting that umbrella up:lol:. I know plenty of non-black women (including white folks) that feel the same way. I don't think she said anything wrong or was implying anything relating to race:confused:.

I get aggravated when I am asked general questions such as why do all black women not want to get their hair wet? That kinda foolishness pisses me straight off. I hate being expected to speak for all black people.

I think it's a stupid question in that they would think HAIR would be the reason a black woman goes running for an umbrella. The fact that they would spout off something like that because they heard other black women say this does not give them a reason to question why another black woman would use an umbrella in the rain. It seems THEY are making it an issue when staying dry is your main concern. It shows a lack of tack. It's stupid because umbrellas are made to keep people dry so hair isn't the issue. I'm not talking about race - I'm talking about common sense.

Am I the only person who walks and doesn't run in the rain? I'm still gonna get wet. Me running isn't going to get me any less wet. :look: But I get what you're saying OP. That is what umbrellas are for.

Okay. Well I guess I can see why that would upset you especially since it appears that she was generalizing and being assumptive with her comment.

ETA: Also, the reason why I mentioned race was because your post made it seem like she made the 'hair' comment based on her perception of black women and you mentioned that she was white.

There was a commercial that played over and over again showing a black women ducking for cover trying to protect their hair when it was raining. It was funny and talked about. I would not be surprised if these people you keep running into did not get the idea from that commercial. The commercial may a year old but it played for the longest time, it must have gotten a big response.

Just a thought.

No, you are not. I walk in the rain for the same reasons as you. The exceptions to this are 1) it's cold outside; i may not mind being wet, but d@mned if i'll be cold:lol: . 2) i'm going to a social event and I just did my hair

I walk too  I believe there were a study years ago that says running causes to get even more wet but I don't know.

Are you sure she said it because you are black, or did you assume so because she is white..maybe both..but anyway is that not what a lot of black women perceive.

I walk...I don't mind the rain..Walked in the rain the other day with the dog. I was more worried about the fact that I would be smelling wet dog all evening but we got caught in it and there was nothing to do but walk in it to get home.

Furthermore, wasn't there just a thread on here where someone was talking about how getting their hair wet ruined the mood or something. So I don't think I'd get ticked off if someone assumed that I did not want to get my hair wet. But personally I don't care if my hair gets wet in the rain.

If I had an unbrella, I would use it. Now that I know how to take care of my hair, when I rains, I just keep cruising. Unless it's pouring down raining! I love the rain now:p My hair is not scared of water anymore:lol:

It does seem like it. You're going to get drenched anyway it goes, depending on how far you have to run and how hard the rain is falling:)

I do!!!!
I am not going to take any of this stuff anymore for anyone, its just stupidity. I never got why black people run from the rain, even if your hair is relaxed its still going to get wet, and even if it does so what? You wet it in the shower too. Anyone else confused about it?:lachen: Some people say it'll revert back to natural, wth? I walk through the rain, calmy like a normal person, not sprinting with a sheet of paper over my head, screaming over my perm. Hell just wash it and dry it when you get home. Sheesh.:ohwell:

Well, I love the rain, so when I get caught in it, I don't do the 'duck, cover & run' unless it's like November, then I'm ducking and running cause cold rain ain't no kinda fun.

LOL this used to be me!! I HATED getting my hair wet in the rain. I don't really care now, but I don't like having wet PANTS :ohwell:

I understand what you mean. I have date a few, well- several white men and they all made comment about black women and their hair. Stuff like " I would ask you to go swimming with me, but, I know dat black women cant get there hair wet". :perplexed I set them straight QUICK!!

Can't?????????? WTH!!! I CHOOSE not to get my hair wet.

If it's warm and drizzling outside, I don't care about having an umbrella. I actually like to feel the rain on my skin. However, if it's cold and/or pouring down rain, I'll use an umbrella. I hate being cold *and* wet*.

Exactly but more black women need to realize that for the stereotype to go away. Imagine this...going to the beach with a bunch of friends (mixed bunch black, white, other involved) While making the plans to go another black girl looks at me and the other black girl in the group in front of all others and says..so what are you two going to do with your hair if we go? lol

Would you (Blackbird77) have had the same reaction if the lady had been black and made that comment?

Yes, I would. Because the issue here is not about getting your hair wet, it's about getting totally wet. And one of the women in question was very sarcastic when she said it. It was her sarcasm that ticked me off. As a matter of fact, she has WSL and I have been trying to grow my hair to at least MBL for years. I always wear protective styles and was wearing a wig on another occasion. She KNEW I was wearing a wig but was trying to get me to admit that I was by point blank asking if that hair I was wearing was mine; talking around it so I could just jump in anytime and say my hair was fake. I don't have a problem telling people (if they ask) if my hair is mine. I have lots of hair - I just want more. That was why I was pissed off about the rain/umbrella situation. She always tried to make everything about hair. So there is a history of her trying to put me on the spot regarding my hair.

Thanks for the explanation. I get it now. I hate people who dig at you for a certain response. Then to answer your question; heck yah! I would have been ticked off. What a Bi--h.

There is the part of the story that is missing...the history between you and the woman...yeah I'd be ticked to if ***** was always in my face about my hair.

I dunno, but I definitely think about my hair when it's raining. Of course I don't want to get wet regardless, but I still think about my hair. The only time I don't really care about my hair getting wet in the rain is if I'm wearing a weave or a wig. In that case, I might run to the car real quick without an umbrella if it's not raining that hard. Anyway, I don't really care what other people have to say about me not wanting to get my hair wet. They're not the ones who have to deal with the aftermath of wet 4a hair!

ETA: The sarcastic remark would've irritated me too. I probably would have broke my umbrella out and told her to shut-up before I pop her with it!-lol

i dont take offense at all. That IS the main reason ill reach for an umbrella. Of course naturally i just dont wanna get wet...BUT..my clothes will dry and be fine...but my hair may not dry looking so presentable and if i KNOW i dont have at least a brush on me to brush down my frizzies after the rain stops...then the umbrella is going up! And it dont matter to me who says it. i seen people of all nationalities flipping out about the rain touchin their hair. Theres nothing bold or ignorant about someone asking me that.

BUT....since you cleared up the fact that theres a history behind it....then thats a different story...

If it was said more out of sarcasm then small talk then of course id be pissed off too.

I love the rain too. I don't even own an umbrella. :ohwell: If my DH isn't holding his above my head I just walk (not run) in the rain.
