Do You Ever Go Back To Things Mama Used To Do.....

When it comes to your hair? I was just thinking how healthy and looong my hair used to when my mom to care of it and about some of the products she used. So I stumble across this emergency 911 leave-in in Walmart..and I think to myself "my mom used to use the smelly a$$ stuff on my hair when I was little". It still smelled the same and I started not to buy, but I said why not. When I got to my room I squirted a little bit in my hand and worked it through my hair. WOW! My hair felt soooooo soft and well..strengthened. I even did a strand test after apply and it was like trying to break synthetic hair . My rollerset didn't even revert once I applied and its water-based. I hadn't seen this stuff in ages so I might go back and buy up the rest of it for safe-keeping :look:. Other stuff my mama used to do that STILL works includes:
* egg & mayo protein treatments (with real eggs and mayo)
* Detangling with olive oil & water
* mane & tail conditioner (but I've found other better ones)
* deep conditioning 1x a week with BOTH a moisturizing & protein based conditioner (at the same time)
* Roller sets & braids (on natural hair)

What are some things your mothers did that still work for you?

Absolutely nothing! :lachen:
All I remember is that Blue Magic Grease and hot comb sizzling away. :nono:
We have two completely different textures, I think she is a 3c wit very fine hair and I just don't think she knew what to do with my hair back in the day.
It's too bad though, I am still struggling with my regi.

two words: Castor oil

HELL NO!

The things mama used to do kept me at SL and above my whole life!

two words: Castor oil

I dreaded this stuff growing up :wallbash::lachen:. My mom used it for EVERYTHING. Ran out olive oil use castor oil, sick & running fever-castor oil, need a laxative-you guessed it CASTOR OIL. The first time she made me take that mess I passed the #!%^ out :perplexed. As you can see, I don't have fond memories about the stuff-but it does work excellent when I applied to skin and hair :ohwell:

Mom still uses that same product! She was always trying to tell me to use it and I was always like "mmmmm, no thanks....". Nowadays I've been looking for it and can't find it anywhere.:nono:

DC with Lekair cholesterol conditioner...still use this stuff to this day! She use to use mane n tail products too..but I do have any of that

I recall a big gulp cup full of water - a bristle brush, and enormous dollops of Blue Magic .....also lots of "dookie" braids.

Mom used to put Dax on my hair when it was still wet and it would dry so smooth and soft. Now, I do that for my twist-outs. It gives great hold and keeps the moisture in.

My mom had Type 2/3 hair and only got a relaxer twice a year. I have type 3c/4a. Nothing she did for her hair worked for mine.

She took good care of my hair, but she complained about my hair texture the whole time. :ohwell:

Oh man, I just got a flashback:spinning::spinning:

Sometimes I would sleep over my great grandma's house. And she had super soft long hair that she'd let me comb sometimes. So I'd get up Sunday lookin a mess and she would try to fix me up for church. Unfortunately her combing methods consisted of telling me " ok -- you pull in this direction, and grandmama is going to pull this way. Ready?"

no wonder I hated combs :nono:

When I was little my hair went past my shoulders. My one million pony tails were about 8 inches long. I recently asked my mother what she did....mind you, this was over 15 years ago, and she can't remember!! :wallbash: She does remember making her own shampoo (but can't remember what was in it, and used blue magic. All these products that are used today weren't around when I was growing up...or at least my mother didn't buy them. She sometimes did the egg wash and egg white conditioner and mayo treatment. My hair was washed and pressed once a month, and she only had to style my hair once a week (pony tails or cornrows aka...low manipulation). But when I had to start taking care of my own hair,it all fell out. I guess she figured I was standing over her shoulder at the same time while I was on the floor. LOL.

Mum used to take quite good care of my hair when I think about it. She use to moisturize and seal. I do that now. She used to use oils like castor and coconut oil mixed up. I've recently gone back to these and my hair is thriving. She also used to braid my own hair and leave it braided for about one to two weeks and then wash and redo it so low manipulation. All of which I have recently started doing again.

Mee too. My mom and well all of the women on her side of the family have some type of 3 hair. I was always jealous of her and her hair. She could wash and go "with Pert" without a freaking problem.

For me, it was horrible combing through my hair. I would cry, she'd get pissed pull harder. She now explains the pulling as the reason my hair grows somewhat quickly :look:.

I do use olive oil and mayo like she did. But that's pretty much it.

Yeah ! She only combed my hair while it was wet (which I do )- and used DAX - she used alot though you could squeeze the grease out of my ends. Also she did low-manipulation- she would braid my hair in cornrows and they would stay in for 2-3 weeks. And the she would re braid my hair with Dax. She did though give me cod liver oil- Ill never forgive her for that!:nono:

fi real...

the only things we had were pink oil, a blowdryer with comb attachment and revlon's balsam and protein shampoo and conditioner.

YUP I would do some of the things my mom did. First of all she wanted me to stay natural until I was in my late teens. (She cried when my dad and I snuck off when I was 12 and got me a perm):nono::nono: Second she used to oil my scalp every night before bed. She washed my hair every two weeks. She conditioned my hair a lot cuz it was constantly dry. When I DID get a perm, she made me get a perm every 8 weeks instead of every 5 like the salon told me. :look:She HAD to be doing something right!! I had APL hair until I started doing my on in the 7th grade!! lool:drunk:

Well my mom was the reason it all fell out in the first place. I would never do the things she used to do to me... such as:
  • Giving me a relaxer at age six or seven
  • pouring undiluted vinegar on my hair and scalp after rinsing out my relaxer
  • Pulling relaxer all the way to ends
  • Hot curlers :mad3:
  • The pain of sleeping on those horrible velcro rollers or the ones with the spikes on them

There's nothing to go back to :nono: ....my mother did not know how to do my hair AT ALL. The only thing she ever did was take me from BSL to ear length in 10 seconds...**snip snip**....my grandmother nor my father never forgave her for that. If I hadn't found LHCF I probably wouldn't have forgiven her either. :ohwell:

I have no idea what products my Mom used to use... all I know is I would always have my hair braided, so I went back to that!

Yes, the good:
washed and conditioned every 1-2 weeks
DCed with cholesterol
also used a heat cap
she rollerset her own hair
she cornrowed my hair occasionally and left it for a couple of weeks
paid for me to get my hair done professionally (wasn't cheap either-I still go to this stylist today:yep:)
No, the bad:
Pressed my hair regularly--I will only do this for my DD once or twice a year
gave me a "Pressing Comb in a Jar"-she even still regrets this 30 years later
let me get a relaxer at age 11

Just 2 things:
parting my hair in TINY sections to detangle and lots of braids. the rest was relaxers, grease and tears!
