Do Oils/cholesterols Really Coat Our Hair (???)

Fearfully Wonderfully Made
I was wondering if this was true because I use LeKair Cholesterol Plus mixed with Hot 6 Oil as a deep conditioning treatment for my hair and came across this article.

Here's an excerpt below from Diana Dudas article on this site: http://www.gatewaytobeauty.com/potpourri/archives_articles/article_quench_frizzies.htm

Hot oil treatments...
Traditions have taught many of us that lavishly applying oil to our hair will give us the soft, shiny hair that we all desire. However more often than not, the opposite takes place. Most oils if they are not essential oils do not have the ability to penetrate into the hair shaft. Nor do heavy cholesterols. What they will do, is to lay on top of the cuticle, and coat the cuticle. This may give the hair some Brilliance. However, it will also coat the hair. And causes product build up.

Product build up...

Once the hair is coated, your problems will commence. First of all, the moisture that our hair so desperately needs will not be able to permeate through the wall of product build. The moisture is then not able to find it’s way underneath the cuticle layer. The hair cannot then be conditioned. Also the oils will not diffuse, but sit on top of the cuticle layer. If you use any kind of hot styling tools such as blow dryers or hot irons, what will happen to your hair, is exactly what happens when you put an egg into a hot pan. It will fry!

If you live in a sunny climate, the oil will do the same thing. The sun will heat the oil and fry your hair. You must have heard the term, my hair feels fried.

*What is your take on this??? Does anyone here agree with her? Should I use something else to deep condition my hair???

I agree with her. However, if you aren't having any problems with the oils, then I don't think you should stop using them. I used to use lots of oils, now I use very little. My hair is doing just fine. If you do use them, just clarify. You should be fine.

Oh, and she's right about being in the sun for long periods of time. If you have oils in your hair or not, you should protect your hair from the sun when you will be out for a long while. Not to mention your skin too. :)

I also partially agree with her, which is why I am giving up LeKair and other cholesterols once I finish the bottle that I have. They almost all contain mineral oil, makes my hair dull. I've just decided that I will have to start spending money on the more expensive, but good stuff, like Kenra MC.

She says "if they are not essential oils," so maybe she is stating that jojoba and other oils might work. I think that she should have been more careful about stating which oils did not work. Hot oils pre-poos have eliminated my dandruff and they have helped to lubricate my hair. Oils can only lubricate the hair, according to many authors, not moisturize.

Interesting... thanks for your views ladies.

DelightfulFlame, I have noticed that LeKair Cholesterol Plus with Hot 6 Oil can feel drying when I first apply it to my hair and has a coated feeling on my hair after washing it out, but when I detangle with it in my hair, it works like a charm. I'm just going to clarify my hair this weekend and not deep condition and see what happens. What do you deep condition with?

*hmmm...thinking of another thread*

I don't know how I got hooked on expensive conditioners with me being a cheapo, but I don't even have to mix oil with these.

My favorites are: elucence, kenra, back to basics coconut mango, and paul mitchell the detangler

Interesting.... I love the way my hair feels after I use Lekair and olive oil mix! :(

I agree with the article about non-essential oils just coating the hair. I guess it depends what we are using the oils for. The oils I use are minimal, such as unrefined coconut oil for my new growth (just a little) and my Aveda to seal the moisture in (combo of castor oil and essential oils). I don't use much because it will build up on my hair, weigh it down and attract more dirt too.

I will probably do what you plan to do, tn2gmh... I don't like for products to go to waste... I have a whole lot left, like 90%... unless someone who likes it wants to buy it from me!

Umm. I wonder if you are rinsing it all out good enough.

Now that you mention it, my hair does feel like it is coated, but a thick, strong feeling, rather than feeling like there is a film or something on my hair. I cant really explain it. I thought it was a good thing, since it felt like my hair was stronger afterwards. I use alot of different oils, so maybe that is why I havent noticed a drying effect. I will observe more carefully next time and see what happens.

Yeah, I pretty much rinse my hair pretty good. I'm the type that likes to rinse squeaky clean but not to the point where it strips my hair. ;) My LeKair is mixed with Hot 6 Oil (I poured 1/2 the bottle and mixed it in the LeKair jar), so that's a lot of oil. But I've tried LeKair before I added oil to it and it makes my hair feel the same way.

I believe that certain items like mineral oil and petroleum cannot be absorbed effectively because they are not natural oils. In turn, they truly COAT the hair instead of absorb into it. However, if you use a nautral/essential oil, such as apricot, jojoba, coconut, etc. your hair will soak it up. Essential oils most closly resemble the oil our bodies produce. I think that essential oils are great. I prefer to use them to moisturize with, especially the last few inches/ends of my hair. I only deep condition using oil every once in awhile. Clarifying never hurts because any which way you go - products are products and they build up! :D

i don't know if it is true, but i LOVE cholesterols. I'll stop using them when they stop working (or if they increase in price--whichever comes first) I saw if it works for you then keep on using it. Don't fix it if it ain't broken.

maybe the olive oil penetrates and the lekair traps in the benefits of the LeKair. I agree with the article, essential oils are good, mineral oils or man made oils just lay on the hair.
