I love the information and advice on this forum. Right now I am supposed to be working but I am on here admiring other people's hair.. :D

Anywhoo, I was wondering how many ladies on the forum NEVER go to the hairdresser. I mean, do pretty much everything yourselves at home?

I can do all of the above. I did go last February to get professional highlights, but I normally do my own color. Actually, I get the BF to help trim my hair, because I can't reach the back.

I can do all of the above myself but I do go to the salon for touch ups. I do my own trims and rinses.

i do it all an i will continue to do it all my hair has gotten the longest it ever was in June then i got a professional flatiron that straightened parts of my natural hair and he decided i needed a 3in trim

same with me. and I may, or may not texturize myself... I guess it just depends on the mood i'm in when it comes to texturizing time. Everything else, i do myself.

(i don't like paying for a service i could do myself.)

Wash, condition, color, cut, press/curl/flat iron...you name it. i haven't been to a beautician since 1990. Went to get my hair done (it was like only the 10th time in LIFE) and my mom started to let me get my hair pressed druing my senior year in High School. Went to my mom's shop, and the regular lady got sick and had to leave, so some new chick did my hair. Well, I was scared b/c thid was Grad picture day and she BURNED THE FRONT OF MY HAIR OUT TO THE SCALP (little burnt blonde pieces all over the place.) Smelled like cheese toast!!!! Needless to say...that was it...

My sister was trying to figure out what she wanted to do with her life at the time, and went to Cosmetology school., so I learned how to press and curl from her...
Now I'm gun-shy when it comes to shops!

I do, or have done, all of the above, except Weave/Braids. I've never had a weave or extensions. I don't see myself going to a salon, anymore b/c my hair looks and feels better when I do it at home.

Relax - either me or my sister
Trim - me(but haven't trimmed in over a year)
Cut- my sister( but haven't cut in a long time)
Color - either me or my sis
All at home..haven't been to a salon since 1996

I would really love to be able to do my own relaxers, but I am WAY too scared that I would have a lot of underprocessed hair, and I've heard so many horror stories about that. I'm not sure I could really do a good job, even if I had mirrors.
I do my own trims and I don't have a problem with doing my own rinses, but I usually get cellophane the same day as my relaxer which is done at the shop, so I haven't done that at home.
I admire the ladies who do everything themselves...I wanna get there one day.

i do my own trims (more like dustings) and my own rinses. WHEN i get to brastrap i want some funky style cut into my hair so i want a top salon 2 do that stuff. i cant wait.i'm bored with my thick U shape mane.

This is very inspiring.

I have done my own colours and relaxed my hair when it was cut really short (eg. Halle Berry, toni braxton type cut)

but now that my hair is longer, I dont know if I would do a good job at relaxing myself but I definately want to to give it a try. I also want to learn how to trim/cut by myself... i fear those dreaded scissor-happy hairdressers.

I trim my hair myself because I just don't trust others very much with scissors around my hair anymore. It seems that trims always turn into cuts for me. And I only go to the salon for color. That is something that I won't venture to do myself. And that's it the other selections don't apply to me.

I haven't been to a hairdresser in a few years. I do everything myself except texturize since I've never had one before. I haven't put a weave in my own hair but I've done my mom's weaves before, I'm getting ready to color my hair again soon and I trim my hair and my mom's hair, getting ready to cut & style one of my wigs soon too. When I was relaxed I did that myself, and I do my own braids.

get a friend to touch-up or do it myself. (since my hairdresser no longer does mizani relaxers!)
highlights professionally done.
rinses - myself.
trims - will do myself from now on since my hairdresser cut my bangs too short.
cuts - i leave to her but watch very closely!

I do it all myself except weave/braids cuz I don't wear weave. But, if I need a couple cornrows for a braid out I can do that myself. I relax, color, trim, rollerset, blowout, etc all at home. The last time I went to the salon was Jan of this year and I don't plan on going back.

Relax - Me or My Mom
Styles / Rollersets - Me
Color - Me
Trim - Professional Stylist ***only once a year *** scissor happy stylists in the past have me now only going to the salon once a year for a trim. Last Trim was July 2005----- Next trim July 2006.

How I wish I could do my own hair. I tried self relaxing once, and it was a complete disaster !! When it comes to hair, you'd think i have 2 left hands.
I want to learn how rollerset tho'. That's my challenge for 2006 !!!

I've done my own touch-ups, I trim, braid & style my own hair. I've never colored it but it cant be too hard to do, havent mastered weaving or cornrows but will do so sometime in the future. :)

I picked color and braid- I haven't been to a salon in years, I don't relax or perm, the last time scissors were in my hair was more than a year ago and that was to cut me some bangs!
I can do anything I want to my hair on my own- don't see a reason to pay anyone..

I used to go to hairdressers but was put off my their unprofessionalism. So I started doing my own hair and that of friends and family. The only time I go to a hairdresser it is usually a barber for a cut. I can pretty much do everything except colouring, I don't dye my hair and so I wouldn't try something that I am unwilling to do on my own hair!

I only wash and set my hair at home. I go to the salon once a month to have someone check out my hair and make sure Im doing everything right and ask questions, etc. For example, I got my hair done a month ago. My hair looked fine but she mentioned that if i stopped doing protein my hair would stop breaking. I did and just did moisture conditioning treatments and i stopped breaking completely. Here I was doing protein to stop the breaking and it was actually making matter worse.

Also, she explained to me why rolling my hair up was more damaging than rolling it down and why you should alternate between magnectic and mesh roller for the health of your hair. They also show me how to create different waves and styles by alternating roller placement. But I still prefer doing my own hair in the meantime to save money and because i handle my hair more gently, take my time, etc.

I go for trims and relaxers because I think they can do a better job than I can at this point.

Woah, ur hairdressers seem very helpful!! my hairdresser is near enough the same advice wise, but i only see her every 3-4months for my re-touch, the others wanna "level it out" or put lots of nasty grease on it :(

I relax and color my own hair after getting my natural hair done professionally in April. I must be doing something right because a co-worker said my hair looked even better than when the "pro" did it! (and this nosy white lady can be really critical!!!)
