i was just wondering cuz i am scared to death!!!! my hair is thick EXPECIALLY at the roots...the last thing i need is someone ripping through that while blowing 2200 watts of heat on my scalp!

oh yeah, i dont know if you all knew this, but im a big fraidy cat! :ohwell:

I did it once. They really and truly did not want to do it. The girl complained the whole time. She rollerset my hair first, then she blowed it out in sections. The heat was very, very hot! And she burnt my scalp a couple of times. Not a pleasant experience at all. I would try to find someone who deals with natural 4a/b only. In my opinion, I think the Dominicans are used to the more softer textured naturals and relaxed heads.

On a side note: What is the full name of the plus-sized model named Tammy in your journal?

I did. I wouldn't suggest it because if you get it done too much your hair will become straight. Like mine... :(

Tami Fitzhugh Thompson...

and thanks for the advice...i KNEW it was a bad idea! :D

That heat is unbearabale...I actually get tears in my eyes. I'd rather get a press n curl any day.

wow! i didnt know it was that bad!
i have, twice. the heat wasnt that bad but the amount of smoke was incredible. also, despite the fact that they trimmed it nice and clean, i swore i had split and breaking ends the next day due to the heat. The first time i loved it, the second time, not so much. Also, my hair was so flat; it took a couple days to get any bounce in it. They did not rollerset it, though.

I get a Dominican blow out every so often (last one was with a trim in November). The heat was only unbearable when I go to tacky salons. At the nice one that I go to, it doesn't burn at all (until they get to the edges lol). I don't know if it's because they use a better blow dryer or are more gentle or what.

im thinking about getting one but my hair is so kinky and coarse i am not sure if they would get it that straight.

oh! your hair is to die for. thinking about that natural thing again... How long does that domincan blow out last?

I was suppose to go get one a few weeks ago and I chickened out in the parking lot. :lachen: I just kept thinking about how much work I've put into my head and how I really didnt want someone to damage all the goodness I've been doing. Plus the area was not all that charming.

if you find a great dominican stylist, they will be determined to get your hair straight at ALL costs!! I have very coarse, oh so thick at the roots hair and they manage to get my hair straight...

That's exactly why I won't go.

Kristina had a DB. Her hair looked great.

Why thank you CG!
Yes, I got one before the last DC meeting. I went to Jaselvis with JenniferMD. There are two pictures of it in my album but I think it looked better at the meeting after I put rollers in.
Some my thoughts on the whole DB thing for kinky girls (ha!) if your manipulation and/or heat phobic, run Forrest! run! I'm really straining how this is considered to be a healthy style option. Especially for naturals since they blow down the length of your hair. You need to anticipate the hairdressers giving you ish about wanting to rollerset your hair because the texture means a whole lot of work. I had to be really insistent because they wanted to just used the blowdryer. When I first figured it out, one of the ladies told me that my hair wouldn't rollerset at all. It took at least five minutes of me insisting before they got someone to set it. And every time she put in a roller (after combing my hair with a rattail comb), she'd point to the blowdryer and ask me if I wanted to reconsider. So if you sensitive to this kind of nappy prejudice, I would be aware.
That said, my hair was really straight and it looked really good. I think I prefer it when my hair is a bit fuller and doesn't lay so flat. Oddly my hair didn't feel as moist as it does with a press and curl (though it looked shiny) so I had to get used to the texture. I would do it again on special occasions if I somehow could be guaranteed that it wouldn't be such an ordeal getting the rollerset and if the setters were really generous with the detanglers before taking to my hair with a rattail. But since I can't get these guarantees, I'll probably stick with the Maxiglide.

Thanks Carribeandream! Okay I'll give the play by play- First they washed my hair, then they applied conditioner at the sink. They combed my hair with a wide tooth comb and I think they applied something to my har because it was super soft. The rollerseting process involved combing out sections and smoothing before putting the rollers in. I sat under the dryer for a little over an hour (I think). Then they took out the rollers and blew it out with a hot(!) blowdryer with a nozzle. It was hot and felt weird but it wasn't painful (I guess I had a good stylist). And they charged 45 at Jaselvis (it's 35 for relaxed people).
