Disaster Weave....

Have any of y'all tried to stretch relaxers by wearing weaves or cornrows as a protective style? I grew out my hair by wearing weaves, but I still permed my hair every 6 weeks or so. I just had a sew-in weave for the last two weeks, and when I took it out it pulled out a lot of my hair. I mean, big clumps kept coming out in the shower. Now my hair looks awful. One side (the one that's always been a little thin) is see through. So what do y'all think I should do? I don't think that a trim will help at all, because its really that drastic. Should I cut it all off, Halle Berry style, or try co-washers, or....? I'm really sad right now because that was about a years worth of hard work, right down the drain. /images/graemlins/nono.gif

Oh my! I am sorry to hear this /images/graemlins/kiss.gif. Is it breaking? I don't think you should cut it all off! I checked your album out, that would be a drastic cut! I suggest trimming little by little, until you gain your thickness back.

My hair starts breaking off after 6 weeks. Usually, I would take out the weave, relax a few days later, then put another one back in about a week later. I think now that stretching out relaxers is just not gonna work for me. Also, I'm scared of braids. They always seem to pull out my edges and break of my ends. I dunno what to do. I was thinking about just transitioning to natural... Maybe wearing buns or phony-tails for a while.

I wouldn't put braids in, I think your hair is too weak. Maybe some loose cornrows or some buns that are not too tight for a while.

I went through something similar. Due to meds my hair thinned out a lot. I've been doing buns and phony tails for about a month now and I think my hair will thank me for it in the future.

I would suggest you do something similar (especially if you're adversed to braids).

I also think you should try stretching your relaxers longer. I can't see how you were getting sever breakage if your hair was always cornrowed. Most of your manipulation would come from removing the rows and relaxing right? Did you prep your hair before your touchups or do relax as soon as you remove the rows? That could be your biggest problem.

Also, do you moisturize the cornrows underneath? Remember, moisture if very important whether you're in braids or sporting a blow out.

All your hair needs is some extra TLC. It may take a while for your hair to thicken up but it will get there.

GREAT question Keisha, my hair suffered the same fate about 2weeks ago. I thinking of returning to a natural state and doing and cut in the top to get those uneven raggedy ends off, and start fresh, but thats just my remedy. I dont know what to suggest for you, but It WOULDNT be for the briads. Sounds like my hair is much like yours, and thats one thing I learned, is that my hair DONT like braids.

girl i am so sorry! maybe you should get that trim and take care of all the damage. then maybe you could try a cap. and glue the weave on there and wear weaves that way.

Stretching out relaxers never works for me, even when I'm in cornrows. When I'm in need of a relaxer, my hair tangles and breaks when I remove braids. My hair also doesn't like braid outs or bantu knot sets. It seems that whenever I wear my hair in curly styles, it tangles badly when I wash it, and I wind up losing a lot of hair.

I'm really upset that all of my hard work is down the drain. My hair looks awful. I feel like I'm just about bald now.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Don't braid it. I have been recommending wigs to everyone whose hair is in need of a rest. My hair is fine too and I recently did a big chop after one of those weave mishaps.

I have had one of those setbacks with the sew in weave when I took in out in May one side was very thin so I used Elastra breakage serum before I had gotten cornrows and my hair made some improvementsince doing so. I now have small braids which arent quite microbraids so I wont have much breakage
