My growth rate has always been the same, but I have retained a ridiculously greater amount of length since I have been natural than when I was relaxed. My relaxed hair remained around shoulder length, and I am at BSL now (and growing! WL '08 hopefully!! 
) I started learning how to take care of my hair the day I went natural, because I had no clue how to care for natural hair. I did horrible, stupid things to my hair when I was relaxed, which partially explains the difficulty I had with retaining length.
