INTEESTING!! Chinese Medicine uses bamboo tabasheer for reasons other than growing hair. They call it Tian Zhu Huang.
For those who are curious, this is how bamboo silica is naturally produced:
"It is formed in the joints of bamboo which have been damaged, particularly (though not exclusively) from the action fo wasps, which bore into the joints and lay eggs. When the eggs hatch and the mature wasps attempt to chew their way out, the damage to the joint precipitates accumulation of the rising sap of the bamboo. As the bamboo ages, the sap dries and solidifies, forming this substance. The quality of the product is related to the activity of the wasps; if the mature wasps fail to escape and die within the bamboo joint, the product is pure white; if they do bore thei rway out and escape, the resulting holes allow contaminating bacteria to enter, turning the product black, which reduces its value."
However, most of what you find on the market are synthetic products, especially in China, Indonesia, Malasia, Singapore and Thailand. This is how the synthetic product is made:
"Bamboo sugar is made by drilling holes in the bamboo sections and filling them with water. After about 6 months, the dride secretions begin to appear. The synthetic product is harder, less absorbent, and its aqueous solution will turn red when exposed to phenolphthalein, wheareas the natural product will remain colorless. "
