Hey Ladies and some gents,

I am at a cross road here. I am sick and tired of dealing with my hair and braids would give me a good rest. However, the cost of $200 plus and the time it takes to braid and unbraid gives me the blues.

Has anyone gotten great growth without getting braids to help them along?

Of course!!! I have never used braids and my hair grew well and I'm sure many others have never used them also. I don't think braids were ever meant to help your hair to grow...correct me if I'm wrong b/c I don't know much about braids. Don't let braids stand in your way.

I have gotten growth without braids, but i was using cornrows (my own hair) and wigs as my protective styles. Since coming to the forum i've been doing buns and keeping my ends tucked. I think it's very possible. -- jainygirl

Yep, I have gotten growth through protective styles like the bun.

The last time I had braids was 2+ years ago, I had micros but only left them in for 1 month, I missed my hair.

I have grown my hair from cheek length to shoulder length though the use of phony ponys but Ive been wearing my hair down since March and its still growing out pretty well. I wear buns, a french braid, braidouts, and roller sets or bantu sets.

Thanks Ladies,

I think I may need to go the roller set route for a while. Buns are ok for a day or so but if I continue to use them my hairline gets raggedy.

I loved braid outs when my hair was shorter but now it looks weird because it's so big... it hasn't started to lay down flatter yet.

So for now...roller sets it is. RollerWrap Express here I come.

How long did it take you to get from cheak to shoulder?

I did when I wore phony ponys for 2 years straight, didn't heat style and relaxed my hair every 6 months.

I get growth and I never wear braids.
I got my twist outs to lay pretty flat by doing 8 flat twists going downward every night after washing or spritzing w/water. When you take them out don't pull the hair apart very much and it stays tame.

Regina, as weird as it may sound, sweat makes my hair grow like crazy. I got a relaxer in July, started working out 4-5 days a week afterwards for the whole month and needed another at the begining of this month. I tried to stretch it but there was too much new growth (about 1/2 inch).

I also where my hair pulled back with ends tucked and sometimes wear my wig, not as a protective style, my ends are just jacked up.

Saying all of that to say I think you can grow hair w/o braids.

Ok.. I am going to try this. I was doing about 10 plaits on my braid out. Ooop guess it was too many because honey... my hair was huge.

I am not sure of how to tuck ends.

I must say I am not a fan a phony ponies. Once my hair is longer and I can wear an acceptable ponytail then I will but I don't care for the phony pony on me.

Anything else girls... I like flexibility and style. I have gotten some good responses though.

Regina, it took a little over a year. I never liked fake hair at all and didnt like phony ponies either, but at the time I was desperate for an acceptable style. My hair had broken off badly and I had to have it cut so short that I couldnt even style it because it was too weak to relax....I just looked like woodstock!

Once I started wearing them, I got hooked on them. Ive been wearing my hair out since march, and just bought another cute phony for hard times. I just dont buy the really long ones bc they dont look realistic at all. I bought a cute little flip stlye one that is reversable so its curled under the other way...I know that when school starts I might go through some hard times where I dont have the time to deal with my hair!:) thats my tried and true solution!

Also its good because u can still protect your ends... my hair is long enough for a ponytail but then my ends are out and can get dry...if Im gonna wear it in my own ponytail then I might as well wear it down bc its the same thing except it looks better.

PS Regina,
Ive found that when I get "big hair" from my bantu sets or braidouts, if I pull it back in a ponytail or up in a clip for a while, then take it down...it lays down much better.

I found this out by accident bc Im known to put my hair up and down a million times before making up my mind and leaving the house!

Thanks Leslie C.. are you in school or do you teach school?

I have really big hair and have tried more grease, so I will try holding it down before I leave. LOL

Right, braids don't necessarily help your hair grow, just a protective style that helps you retain your length.

Do you think it's the increased circulation to your scalp (delivering nutrients to your hair follicles) that causes the growth spurts? As opposed to sweat?

I dunno, Leslie C - Woodstock was pretty cute. In fact, we have sculptures in the Twin Cities (Minnesota) paying tribute to Woodstock and Snoopy. You were in good company.

Regina, I agree with the other posters. I've been able to grow my hair by using styles that require little manipulation (that's why I think hair grows in braids - little manipulation) and by keeping my hair moisturized and conditioned.

I was about to say this... it's the nourishing blood circulation that's given you the boost. That's why head massages are sometimes encouraged!

Ladies, I am getting encouraged here. I just didn't want to shell out 200 for some braids right now. I will once winter starts though because my wool coat tears up the back of my head. I am still suffering from the breakage now.

Hairlove, I agree that braids don't make the hair grow, it's just one of many protective styles that help one retain length. I think it is possible to get good growth without the use of braids. Protective styling is the key....
Although I've worn braids 4x from March 2003 until now, I think well moisturized hair put into a protective style in general has helped me. Also I don't use any heat on my hair unless it's relaxer day and I'm getting a set and blow....
