i've been loosing alot of hair these days and i'm thinking maybe it has to do with my detangling technique.

i've always done it from root to tip. Fo rme this is the only way to get all the knots and tangles out.

but i've read that more than a few ladies do it the other way around : from tip to root and i'm like :ohwell: .

I tried it and it felt like i've done nothing to my hair, or maybe i'm missing something.

do you just slide the comb for top to bottom? when i tried that the knots were still their.

Anyways this might sound like a stupid question but what it your detangling technique and has it had any affect on the condition of your hair?

Work from the ends combing away from the root, go higher and higher up the more you detangle. To start off with section off your hair. Then start an inch or 2 from the ends, then when that is detangled move a couple of inches up towards the roots and detangle. Then move a couple more inches up. Do this until you reach your roots and by then your hair should be detangled. Also you should be doing this when your hair is soaked in conditioner

thanks alot.
i shall try this .

ITA with Ekaette. :yep: Also, I detangle under the running water of the shower, while rinsing after deep conditioning for 30 minutes or so. The force of the water helps to detangle while combing from the end to the root. I prefer using a wide tooth Jilbere show comb to detangle (and for all of my combing).

Combing from root to tip under running water w/ conditioner, still leaves me having to comb AGAIN when I step out the shower :perplexed The only way to detangle my hair completely is when it's dry. :ohwell: I lose too much hair while combing wet.

I section my hair with my fingers and go a section at a time. First with a really wide toothed comb, then a slightly smaller one. Never dry I always put moisturizer of some sort in it.

My hair isn't that long but it loves to knot up.

Then as I finish a section I make a little bun and move on.

I only detangle on wet hair that is loaded with conditioner

After I detangle each section, I twist or braid it. That way, when you hop out of the shower, it won't be a tangled mess. I usually end up with 5 big twists.

As my hair gets longer, I have to do this...it really works, and it doesn't take as long as you think.

Ido it from tip to roots and I use a needle for knots , you must only be patient I hope this will help you.
Good luck .

I've never been able to detangle from tip to roots, I always do it from roots to ends. I detangle under the shower stream.

hmmm that's interesting . Is your hair totally dry or do you use some moisturizer?

I'll try this technique if the other option doesn't work out.

thanks a lot ladies.

I detangle from ends to roots in sections on wet hair with my favorite detangling leave-in (ojon revitalizing mist). Detangling from ends to roots takes a little getting use to if you are use to doing it the opposite way.

I'm going to try this because my NG is killing me. I can manage alright in the shower sometimes but once I get out...:nono:

ITA with what all the other ladies are saying. Once I added a Denman to the line up, it was all she wrote! Denman made the difference for me in addition to detangling under shower stream end to roots with large tooth comb or a Jilbere.

So I was wondering was there a thread on detangling methods...
2day I somewhat had an aha:think: moment when I was doing my Curlformers set. I was trying 2 figure out how 2 cut down on the time it was taking me 2 do an entire set (90 mins).

Usually I would section my hair into 4ths & then detangle 1 section & then set that section w/the Curlformers & move on 2 the next section. So I was combing each quarter section 2 detangle & then I would still have 2 comb each individual smaller section as I put each Curlformer n. (I hope I'm making sense.)

Well 2day I decided 2 still section my hair n2 fourths but instead of stopping 2 detangle 1st I immediately started sectioning my hair off 2 put n the Curlformers. So I only combed once & my detangling was done right b4 I put each roller in. So I did the ultimate no-no:nono: & detangled my entire head with a small tooth comb. But... since it was very small sections at a time, I lost less hair than when I do it w/the KCutter 1st.

So this shaved 30 mins off my setting time. I was able to put in 52 curlformers n an hour.

BTW I used Surge14 & Giovanni leave-n as my detangler.

I do it this way also when I rollerset. Works great. :yep:

I was just about to ask this cause i want to rollerset tommorrow.

Is it worth detangling twice as in whole head of hair then individual sections or just using a fine tooth or even wide tooth comb to detangle individual sections? :spinning:
I think the second option would mean less hair lost?

Moon is that you in your siggie? If it is then I luv it!
I wish i could model but i have chosen the medical school path in life :ohwell:

Moonxyz..this seems to be a recurrent theme running through some threads recently so it may just be a seasonal thing{I HOPE!}..actually I do not know but seems to be happening to a few people. I would never comb from root to tip..leave that to the stylists!:nono:

I would be bald if I detangled in the shower. I usually put my hair in a plait in the back and secure with a barrett. Then I condition wash. Next I let my hair air dry for about a 1/2 hour, take the barrett out and let air dry. Sometimes I will set infront of a fan and work my fingers thru my hair or sit under my dryer with a cool setting. After I'm almost completely dry then I will detangle with my fingers, pulling sections of hair from the knot until I am done. Takes about and hour of constant detangling but I don't loose hair and my hair is very thick. If I plan on flat ironing then I will get a shower comb and go over my hair small section at a time combing from tip to root. I loose a little hair when I do this but not much.

girl, looking at your hair, i think you and i have the same hair type. i too can only truly detangle when my hair is dry....not completely dry, but slightly damp. when its wet i wont dare try to completely detangle...maybe finger detangle, but never with a comb. as soon as i step out of the shower...tangles again. so i dont even try. its best when its semi-dry.
