Detangling...and fine tooth combs?

is there ever a time, circumstance when it would be a good idea to use a fine tooth comb during the detangling process?

my stylist usually starts out with a finetooth comb and then switches to a bigger comb/?

i've wanted to stop her on more than one occassion, but i was thinking maybe she does it for something purposes when she wraps it? i don't know..., though..?

There is very few reasons ever to use a fine tooth comb, the only one I can think of is applying a relaxer.

I stopped my stylist from using one. Those combs will rip your hair right out or snag it in the middle. They are not good for your hair at all.

*YIKES* I would very politely ask that she refrain from using this. I dont see any benefits at ALL in using this, except as dlewis said, when pulling the relaxer thru at the roots.

I've always used a fine toothed comb when pressing but I have already detangled the section before using the fine tooth comb.

the only reason to use a fine toothed comb... in my mind is to smooth the hair before rollersetting. I don't think a fine toothed comb should be used for detangling.

I don't let fine-tooth combs near my head. A couple of years ago I asked my girlfriend to cornrow my hair and she agreed. She asked if I had a fine tooth comb and I asked her what she needed it for. She said to part my hair and I was fine with that. Needless to say though, once she got to braiding she was trying to comb through my hair with that thing!

I don't like them at all. :nono:

I use a fine tooth bone comb instead of a brush to smooth my hair...only after it has been detangled with a comb in the shower with conditioner. I've done this for almost 3 years and it works for me.

When it comes to detangling, I have found that it is better to start with big bombs and work your way down to the smaller combs. I only use a small tooth comb when I have a very tiny tangle that a wide tooth comb wont go through.

I dont think it's ever a good idea to detangle with a fine tooth comb.It would rip out way too much hair. Only after using a wide tooth comb would i consider using a fine tooth to smooth out the hair, for let's say, rollersetting.

I don't use a fine tooth comb but I do use a paddle brush to smooth it out a bit. I don't think a fine tooth comb would work for me.

I always use my shower comb or the tail of a rattail comb to section my hair. The only time that I use a rattail comb's teeth is when I am rollersetting. Even then, my hair is detangled before I use it... and I use it properly-- starting from the ends, up.

I only use a fine tooth comb to smooth out the hair when rollersetting. That's only after I've already detangled completely with a wide tooth comb.

Why do stylists do this? I cannot figure it out  Is this something they teach them in school? What genius came up with this idea!! Ok..i had to get that off my chest.
