For the last month i have been at odd with my self over my hair type. I was convincing my self that I was a 4A maybe a 3c at the least but since my wash yesterday I now know the truth. I am a 3B/3C and proud. I washed with baby shampoo deep conditioned with got to be so smooth, conditioned with smooth and sleek. Afterwards I only sprayed some leave in on and started doing some reading for school. I reached up a felt my hair then ran to the mirror. Half of my hair was in spirals. I am now condsidering the big chop. Does anyone have any advice? I'm nervous about what family and friends will say about me having hair this short and how I will look.

Thanks for any help,
Adrian

You might want to transition instead of chopping it off. For me the hardest part in going natural was having really short hair for a few months. I tried to transition with braids and weaves but I didn't have the will power. So if you can tranistion that would be the best thing to do to avoid any bald awkwardness.

Thanks so much for the guidance coming from the same place in the past and also having a similar hair type.

If you are a little scared to cut off your hair you can go through a transition period.

Keep in mind that your hair texture may still change a bit over the next year. Most naturals go though a period of "scab hair" while they are transitioning.

I think you should do what you feel is best for YOU, don't worry about what friends and family say. You will never be able to please everybody at the same time. If they hate it, but love you then they will accept it. The way you wear your hair has no bearing on your heart!

Maybe you can try on some wigs in the length/texture you are considering cutting to, then you will have a general idea whether you will like it or not.

Like you I think my hair is 3c but I am not really positive, my new growth is really easy to lay straight. When I say I need a touch up, people say where?? I think I am so used to seeing my hair silky straight, that as soon as it gets a wave pattern, I start thinking I need a t-up...I am going to go 4 months without a t-up so I can get a real good look at my texture...Anyways this isn't about me it is about you, sorry.

Oh yeah, I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but baby shampoo is very drying to the hair. Most people think it is gentle on hair because it is designed for babys...well the truth is, it has mild anesthetics in it
so if it gets in babys eyes he/she will not cry from the shampoo stinging.

HTH and good luck with your decision...don't forget to keep us posted!!

Hello Adrian,
Good luck with going natural. I think you will find the journey fun and not half as daunting as you may believe. I am not a 3b but I did transition by wearing my hair back in a bun or a single braid. I usually rinsed every morning and applied 911 leave in to my hair then braid in one plait and go. Over time, I clipped more and more and before I knew it I was natural and the relaxed hair dissapeared.

I really can't tell you how long it took because quite honeslty I did not care much about my hair in those day.

So you can transiton or you may try braids. I love braids!

With your hair texture you should be able ot transistion easily. When I finally did chop, it was only to chin length. It grew back so fast though, since I didn't have to worry about a relaxer drying my hair out.

Congratulations on discovering your true texture.

If you're really nervous about cutting off your hair, then take your time. Your hair will grow, whether you chop it short or not, so it can wait if you can.

Your curls are also being weighed down by the length of your hair. Sections of my hair formed beautiful spiral ringlets at the roots while I transitioned. After I chopped off the relaxed ends, the coils tighten up to half the length they had been before!
